HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Congress may have avoided the fiscal cliff by passing a last-minute tax deal, but Hill Air Force Base’s civilian workforce hasn’t escaped the possibility of facing furloughs.

Furloughs not imminent for Hill Air Force Base civilian workers

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Nearly 20,000 civilian employees at Hill Air Force Base will show up for work this week unless they’re told otherwise.

The Defense Department is preparing to notify its 800,000 civilian employees that some of them may have to take unpaid leave next year if lawmakers don’t pass the budget deal reached between the White House and Senate Republicans late Monday night.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — The 388th and 419th Fighter Wing pilots will conduct night flying missions during a “surge” exercise today through Thursday.

Local residents may hear F-16s flying during the night hours as pilots practice nighttime combat flying operations.

Bishop: VA ignoring pleas for mental center in Ogden

OGDEN — Efforts to set up a veterans mental health center in the Top of Utah have run into a brick wall of silence from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Rep. Rob Bishop’s office said this week that three separate attempts stretching back to the George W. Bush administration have failed to get an Ogden center approved.

Bishop’s office said the last attempt, an Aug. 23 letter directed personally to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki from Utah’s entire congressional delegation, is apparently being ignored.

Wings & stuffing: Hill families enjoy Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — With no planes in sight, the only thing with wings in Hangar 37 on Hill Air Force Base’s flightline was the turkey.

The men and women of Hill’s two fighter wings will get a pair of Thanksgiving feasts this year. As an added bonus to what they’ll eat today, Hill’s 388th and 419th Fighter Wings held a combined Thanksgiving feast in one of the base’s airplane hangars Wednesday afternoon.

The massive meal fed more than 1,500 people, including airmen and their families. The meal featured 48 turkeys, 30 hams, 140 boxes of stuffing, 70 boxes of potatoes and nearly every food item one could desire on Thanksgiving Day.

Ogden parade honors veterans' sacrifices

OGDEN — Retired Air Force Col. Timothy Healy pulled at his jacket Saturday, straightening it a tad before sirens blared to start the seventh annual Veterans Day Parade.

This was the first time Healy, 74, of Pleasant View, had marched in the parade. “It is significant for our citizens to remember the sacrifices made by all the military personnel over the years,” he said.

The parade, hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1481, started on Washington Boulevard at 31st Street and ended at 23rd Street.

Hill commander gets second star

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Maj. Gen. H. Brent Baker Sr., commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, received his second star at a promotion ceremony Friday at Hill Aerospace Museum.

Baker assumed command of the complex in July. He entered the Air Force in 1979 as an enlisted member and was commissioned in 1985 through Officer Training School after graduation from Southern Illinois University.

Before assuming command at Hill, Baker served as the commander, Air Force Global Logistics Support Center at Scott AFB, Ill.

Police: Syracuse deaths believed to be murder-suicide

SYRACUSE — In what police believe to be a murder-suicide, a husband and wife, Gary and Jessica Lucero, were found dead Monday morning in their Syracuse home, at 903 S. 2125 West.

Police confirmed the names of the couple, who were named by other media, but were not releasing the names in order to give the family time to grieve.
