Air Force officials announced Oct. 29 that Hill Air Force Base had made the candidate list of basing locations for the F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter.
The base was among 11 other sites under consideration after looking at criteria such as airspace, flight training ranges, weather, support facilities, runways, taxi ramps and environmental concerns, and military judgment factors such as combatant commander requirements, aircraft retirements and delivery schedules, aircraft maintenance and logistics support and integration with the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.
A formal environmental impact analysis process and site assessments were expected to follow allowing input from nearby communities into the process. A final decision is expected late spring of 2010.
