The National Day of Prayer Ceremony at Hill Air Force Base featured a motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic, who talked about how he made his own way with the use of prayer after being born without limbs. "When I was a kid, I would go to school and say, 'Why did God let me have no arms or legs?'ââ" he said. "All I saw was unfairness."
After trying to drown himself at age 8, and struggling for some years with why he was so different he finally realized at 15 years of age that his mission in life was to use his condition to help others.
"I realized I was more complete than the average person," he said, because he knew that he was a child of God.
Sprinkling humor throughout his presentation, Vujicic said later that is one of the ways he helps people to feel comfortable with his appearance.
Vujicic recalled having some fun at a little boy's expense who was freaked out about his condition and who asked him how he lost his limbs. "I looked him right in the eye with a straight face and just said, 'Cigarettes.'ââ"
His condition, Tetramelia disorder, hasn't prevented him from traveling the world and carrying his motivational message as a preacher. He was born missing both arms at shoulder level, and has one small foot with two toes protruding from his left thigh.
Vujicic also made time to speak at other gatherings in Utah and planned to return to the state to present his message once more.
