The Wright-Patt CCAT team is led by Maj.

Heart health for women

Heart disease. Many people think of it as a man's disease, but women can get it too. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States -- making heart health an important issue for women of all ages.

The most common cause of heart disease is coronary artery disease, or CAD, a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Luckily, the steps you can take to help prevent CAD are effective against other causes of heart disease as well.

Reminders for flu prevention, staying healthy

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention division of hygiene suggests that 80 percent of infectious disease is transmitted by touch. The Naval Health Research Center says that washing hands properly five times per day can decrease the incidence of respiratory disease by 45 percent. These are important pieces of information when you consider that the influenza virus can live on a surface for two to eight hours (depending on environmental factors).

We all know the best way to prevent the flu is by vaccination.

February is Children's Dental Health Month

It is never too early to care for a child's teeth! Dental health starts at a very early age and properly caring for children's teeth and gums can prevent many dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.

Infants' gums and teeth can be cleaned using a wet washcloth or piece of gauze. A child's first dental visit should coincide with their first birthday. This allows the dentist to look for any dental abnormalities, and to educate the parents about an appropriate dental hygiene regimen.

H1N1 influenza could still pose major health risk

The average American believes the H1N1 influenza is now of little concern. Statistically speaking, to date, that sentiment is not unfounded. The number of people infected by H1N1 has been no more severe than a typical seasonal flu and the number of hospitalizations and deaths has not been high enough to be considered "newsworthy."

However, the historical pattern of this disease reminds us to remain vigilant. Most of the influenza pandemics we've faced came in multiple waves occurring over a two- to three-year period and death tolls were in the millions.

Flu myths debunked

Since the novel H1N1 influenza began its trek around the world last spring, many theories have arisen as to its origins, modes of transmission and means of prevention. Much of this information is based on misunderstandings, falsehoods and the love of a good conspiracy theory. And because many of us get our news and information from non-medical sources, its time to discredit some of the common myths that are floating around.

Myth No. 1 -- "Flu vaccines contain adjuvants that cause an inflammatory response in the body."

Remember family members when at-risk for suicide

KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Thirty years ago, my father changed my life, as well as the lives of his other family members, forever. He took a shotgun and shot himself in the head. His death certificate reads, "Self-inflicted gunshot wound." I can't tell you how many times I've heard people joke about something being so bad, "that I should just shoot myself."

As I hear songs like "Butterfly Kisses" and "Daddy's Hands," as I watch a movie like "Father of the Bride," that phrase, "self-inflicted gunshot wound," echoes in my mind.

Restoration Advisory Board member applicant sought as environmental rep

Hill's Environmental Restoration Advisory Board, or RAB, is seeking applicants interested in representing the community of Hill Air Force Base during important environmental cleanup decisions that affect the base and the surrounding communities. The RAB will accept applications from Hill AFB residents or those who work at Hill.

The You Matter Campaign has released its updated quarterly poster and focuses on the topic of depression. (Kent Perry)

You Matter: Overcoming depression

The start of a new year can bring with it a sense of renewed hope and promise, although for many it can bring feelings of despair and angst -- with credit card bills catching up from the holidays, numbers on the scale demanding immediate attention or simply struggling to get back into the daily grind.

Physical Training Uniform; wear it right, wear it proudly

On Oct. 28, Headquarters Air Force A1 released updated guidance in Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Appearance of Air Force Personnel, which codified appropriate wear of the Air Force Physical Training Uniform, or PTU, and the improved PTU (IPTU). Since then the key has been to educate Airmen on the appropriate wear. Observations from chiefs and first sergeants across Hill Air Force Base have concluded we are not where we should be with respect to proper wear.

January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month

January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month. The "Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results" estimates 11,270 women will be diagnosed and 4,070 women will die from cervical cancer in the United States in 2009. Over the past 40 years, death from cervical cancer has significantly declined. Today, it accounts for only 1 percent of cancer deaths among American women. This decrease is largely due to current screening practices.

Infection by human papilloma virus, or HPV, is the main cause for abnormal changes to cells of the cervix which can lead to cervical cancer.

Not done with H1N1 just yet

Unfortunately we are not finished with the flu season yet. Peak activity over the past 26 seasons has typically occurred in February. Therefore, Public Health is not finished monitoring the disease and providing you with the most up-to-date medical advice. Though at this point you must be tired of hearing about "flu this" and "wash your hands that." So here are some things you may not have known about the novel H1N1 influenza.
