Hilltop Life

Another tool for life skills

With new, tougher physical fitness standards in place and the winter months nearly upon us, the new Health and Wellness Center Web site's bold colors and meaningful design bring a breath of fresh air to the health scene.

"Overall the look is intended to inspire and uplift -- both ourselves and those around us," said David Perry, a Multimedia Information Specialist from the 75th Air Base Wing and the designer of the Web site.

Perry's fresh design for the HAWC Web site mostly revolved around the new logo design he also created, as well as the "4 Pillars of Wellness."

'Fight the flu'

As 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccinations arrive in limited quantity, it's more important than ever to implement everyday flu prevention actions. Even if you've already been vaccinated for seasonal influenza, you may still be susceptible to illness. The mass availability of H1N1 vaccine has been estimated to occur mid to late November 2009. Availability and distribution at Hill Air Force Base will be widely reported when shipments arrive. At present, H1N1 vaccinations will be provided through your county health department.

Web site aids in getting the HAWC word out

Since the new Web site has gone up, the Health and Wellness Center participation rate for activities and classes has risen, says Patricia Cerone, Team Hill's Health and Wellness Specialist.

All base personnel who have access to the Hill Air Force Base Web site at www.hill.af.mil can click on the Health and Wellness Center logo in the center of the Web site, scroll down, and review three months of HAWC calendars, events, activities, and classes.

CHPS offers activities, classes in wellness effort

Civilian Health Promotion Services works on a number of projects in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Center and the Fitness Center at Hill Air Force Base. In light of the continued, strengthened emphasis on fitness and the other pillars of wellness so central to the well-being and ability of Team Hill to serve the war fighter, there is a renewed effort as all three programs work together to provide activities and classes crucial to these skills.

"CHPS teaches a variety of classes that have a direct emphasis on fitness," says Teresa Hussain, program manager.

Review: 'The Ugly Truth' lays it out there, lives up to name

Many would like to think they know the differences between men and women.

Some get planetary -- that whole Mars/Venus thing. Dr. Laura thinks she has her finger on the pulse of the whole mystery. And then there's Mike (Gerard Butler).

He's a plain-spoken (and by that, I mean vulgar and misogynistic) burly guy who believes he knows what women really want from men, and vice versa.

It's apparently to go back to the caveman days, grunt some guttural tripe and she's yours for the taking.

Is it H1N1?

Important actions to take if you think your child has H1N1 flu:

Do not panic! Most cases of H1N1 influenza are mild and resolve on their own with time. Most children with flu do not need to be seen in the clinic.

1) Keep your child at home and avoid contact with other people. Staying at home means that the sick person should not leave home except to seek medical care.

H1N1 symptoms in adults

For adults, again as in the case of children -- do not panic! Most cases of H1N1 influenza are mild and resolve without treatment. Most people with flu do not need to be seen in the clinic.

1) Stay home and avoid contact with other people. Staying at home means that you should not leave your home except to seek medical care.

Flu avoidance

Everyday actions can help prevent the spread of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses like flu: Keep unwashed hands away from your face. Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoid crowds and practice other social distancing measures. Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for several days. Purchase a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs, tissues and other related items you might need in order to avoid trips out in public while you are sick and contagious. Be sure you have a thermometer and know how to use it.

Treat everyone to safety this Halloween

Everyone needs to take extra care on Halloween -- Oct. 31 -- when excited children in costumes are out in force. Motorists need to be extra careful during trick or treat hours, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., and parents should review safety rules with their children. The 75th Security Forces Squadron members will X-ray and examine candy for all Hill trick or treaters as part of the annual Pumpkin Patrol on Halloween night. Parents or guardians can bring their child's candy to the Youth Center, Building 883 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Quilted 'hugs' for troops and veterans

More than 100 quilts are being pieced, stitched, stuffed with batting and finished up nicely with intricate quilt patterns for the new Veterans Home in Ogden. Or at least, that's what Diane Jaeger, state representative for the Quilts of Valor nonprofit, intends by the time the official opening is held Nov. 19.Jaeger, a management assistant with the 571st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, has a number of quilts that have been committed to the project, in several stages of completion, but her ultimate goal is a quilt for each bed -- 120 of them.

Guarding the gates now Department of Air Force

On Sept. 30 at midnight, the contract security guards TW and Co. quietly handed over security of the gates to Hill Air Force Base to the Department of the Air Force Police and 75th Security Forces. After more than five years of protecting the base entry gates, the Air Force contract will close out as they have already done at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and will do so across the Air Force through 2012.

'Watt's up? Tips can help save on office power consumption

Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of articles highlighting October as National Energy Awareness Month. The staff of the Energy Management Office wishes to remind each Airman, civilian employee, and contractor working at Hill Air Force Base of their responsibility to use energy wisely. Practicing wise energy use and eliminating waste in the workplace enables you to directly contribute to the Air Force's energy goals. This year's theme is "Energy Solutions ... Fueling the Mission." Everything we practice today will ultimately impact future generations.
