Outdoor Recreation spring activities

The Outdoor Recreation office is hosting several trips and outings throughout this spring and summer, including an additional ladies' ATV trip. For more information, please contact the Outdoor Recreation office at 777-2225.

  • San Juan River Trip: April 4-9 -- families and Airmen are encouraged to take a trip on the San Juan River in Southern Utah. The rapids are Class 1, 2 and 3.

Indoor Pool offers workouts, at 6 a.m., swim meet

Hill's Indoor Pool, in Building 520, will be offering a free work-out group on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 a.m. The group, which is loosely affiliated with Utah Masters Swimming and U.S. Masters Swimming, is designed to teach swimmers better technique, help keep them in shape, how to get ready for competitions, and more.

The Indoor Pool will also be hosting a swim meet March 22-26.

Hubbard Memorial Golf Course program takes top Air Force level honor

The Hubbard Memorial Golf Course program is the Air Force Golf Program of the Year 2010.

Creating sparks in children's minds about outdoor activities

Flames lit up the excitement in children's eyes as members of the Military 4-H Outdoor Recreation Club, a part of the Youth Programs on base, learned how to create fire using flint and tinder Feb. 27.

The club's first activity was held at Wetland Discovery Point in Kaysville as children learned basic survival skills for the outdoors and played a game where they pretended to be stranded on an island.

"We talked about what the human body needs to survive.

Help out the HANNspree Superbike event

Team Hill volunteers have been invited to help at the HANNspree Superbike World Championship which returns for a third year, making its only visit in the Western Hemisphere at Miller Motorsports Park.

The production-based bullet bikes from Yamaha, Ducati, Honda, BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Aprilia will battle at up to 200 mph with some of the world's best riders.

The HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship, will be May 29-31.

Ladies ATV Trip, April 24, $90 per person -- includes ATV, gas, helmet, lunch and guide. Depart at 8 a.m. and head to the east side of Utah Lake. Bring gloves, boots, jacket and goggles. Wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Call (801) 777-2225 to reserve your place.

Havasupai Falls trip, April 28-May 3, $270 per person -- hike some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the western Grand Canyon.

Bowling Center lanes great place to strike up some fun

Bowler Appreciation Day: Every Sunday from noon to 4:30 pm, bowling is $1.50 per game.

Thunder Alley: Every Friday evening from 9:30 p.m. to midnight, rent-a-lane for as many as six bowlers (shoes included and unlimited games) $40. Reservations advised.

Colorama/Casino Night: Saturday, March 20, 9:00 p.m.-midnight. Cost is $15 per bowler, limited to bowlers age 18 and older. Chance to win cash prizes. Progressive strike-pot tickets 50 cents each.

Family Night: Every Monday evening from 6:30 p.m.

Concealed Firearms course offered at Hill Rod and Gun Club

The Hill Air Force Base Rod and Gun Club held its 10th Concealed Firearms course Feb. 23 with more than 50 people in attendance and approximately 100 people on a waitlist to attend.

The popularity of the course, which is certified through the State of Utah Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Identification, could be linked to the fact that more than 32 states and certain countries accept the Utah permit to legally carry a concealed firearm, said Jerry Hunsinger, one of the certified instructors of the Concealed Firearm course.

Outdoor Recreation is hosting a recreational ATV trip just for women on April 24, $90 per person, includes ATV, gas, helmet, lunch and guide.

On Feb. 25, Jim Burnworth will host a free hunting symposium at the Club Hill ballroom, 1 p.m.-3 p.m., where audience members will be able to ask the professional sportsman questions and he will provide general information about hunting and equipment. The symposium will make up part of the show that will be aired later this fall.

The "Western Extreme" crew will also give away prizes during the symposium, such as Savage rifles, Nikon optics, Bowtech bows, arrows and hunting apparel. The TV show is visiting Hill Air Force Base Monday, Feb. 22 through Feb.

AAFES opens gun counter at BX

The Army and Air Force Exchange gun counter grand opening Feb. 9 marks the extension of the Hill Air Force Base main store and includes an additional 1,485 square feet of camping, hunting, fishing and gun accessories as well a wide assortment of ammunition.

The Hill AFB Base Exchange expansion joins 13 other AAFES sites in offering firearms, ranging from handguns to hunting rifles.

In celebration of the Year of the Air Force Family the 75th Force Support Squadron will be holding a basewide Chill on the Hill event at Hubbard Golf Course on Saturday, Feb. 6, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
