Civilian Health Promotion Services works on a number of projects in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Center and the Fitness Center at Hill Air Force Base. In light of the continued, strengthened emphasis on fitness and the other pillars of wellness so central to the well-being and ability of Team Hill to serve the war fighter, there is a renewed effort as all three programs work together to provide activities and classes crucial to these skills.
"CHPS teaches a variety of classes that have a direct emphasis on fitness," says Teresa Hussain, program manager. "Benefits of exercise, exercise and aging, and walking classes have physical fitness as the main focus.
"In our other classes which focus on health promotion and disease management, physical fitness is discussed in relation to how it improves health and decreases disease risk," Hussain said. Among these such focused classes are women's health, men's health, back care, weight management, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension.
CHPS is working hand-in-hand with the other programs to promote the Freeze the Gain effort, Team Lean Challenge, the Bingo challenge during the recent fitness month, and the Great American Smoke-Out.
Additional efforts include promoting classes such as stress management and managing change in conjunction with the Employee Assistance Program.
One of the most important goals right now for the program is to increase the number of civilians logging onto the Wellness Web site and taking a Health Risk Appraisal. The HRAs offer patrons a chance to review lifestyle practices and reveals health issues, monitor health so that patrons can see how their health risks may have changed when revisiting the site for the next activity, delivers follow-up intervention for those at risk, and helps patrons become aware of their risk factors. The site also allows the tracking of trends and analyzes population health risks over time from a statistical stand point.
The latest activity to require the use of the HRA is the Freeze the Gain program. All information is obtained with the same care and confidentiality given patrons at all times, but it is helpful to know what risks the civilian workers face at Hill AFB in order to tailor programs and offer activities to address those needs.
