Year of the Air Force Family: Hill takes care of all service retirees

Anyone who has retired from any branch of the military, has an office on base dedicated to assisting with any questions or concerns related to entitlements and benefits.

The Hill Air Force Base Retiree Activities Office is located in the Customer Service Building, Building 430 (commonly referred to as the old BX). The primary mission is to serve as a focal point for the retiree community in its relationship with military installations. As the base level component of the Air Force Retiree Council, the RAO serves the military retirees of all the uniformed services, spouses, widows, widowers and dependent family members. The program is designed to promote, support, advance and unify the military retired and active duty communities. With this in mind, the Hill AFB RAO proactively serves to remind the retired military population that neither their service nor their families have been forgotten.

Being of assistance to the retired mission is of primary concern to the volunteers in the RAO. Their service includes, but is not limited to, providing general retiree benefit information. The RAO offers information regarding casualty assistance, TriCare, other base programs, on-base functions and base facilities to name a few. These services are available to the entire 18,000 military retirees and family members living in the greater Hill AFB area and surrounding community.

The RAO will answer virtually any question related to military retirement and can assist with problems associated with pay, DD214s, renewal of ID cards, death of a member or availability of various base services. The RAO is a central point of contact for all retirees and their families.

The Hill AFB RAO is managed and operated by volunteers Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Marine Col. (Ret.) Dan Petrizzo, is the director of the RAO at Hill AFB. More volunteers are always needed and anyone interested with at least three hours per week of availability is encouraged to contact Petrizzo or any of the volunteers staffing the RAO at (801) 777-5735 or by e-mail via retact@hill.af.mil. The Web page is located at www.hill.af.mil after a click on the retiree activities link.

Volunteerism is integral to the success of many of the things accomplished on base. Without it, many of the quality of life programs and community service activities wouldn't exist. Without volunteers the Hill AFB RAO would not be here to serve retirees. A retiree or spouse comes equipped with superior skills and significant life experiences; their help is always needed. As a volunteer, people set their own schedule, spend as much or as little time as they choose. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer on base and the RAO can help you find a good fit.

Anyone who is a retired military member or family member, the RAO is ready and willing to help you. Stop by and meet some fellow retirees.
