Bombloads of competition

The 649th Munitions Squadron hosted the first "Ammo Olympics" at Hill May 27 that featured eleven different events in which Airmen in the ammunitions career field competed against one another.

The Ammo Olympics events were all related to the career field and were open to all service members and retirees who are or were in Ammo in any military branch.

"There are approximately 8,000 Ammo troops in the Air Force and at least 500 stationed here so this is a great opportunity to get to know each other, because there are people even in my own squadron that I have never even seen," said Tech. Sgt. Ben Manley, 519th Combat Sustainment Squadron.

The events kicked off with the 40-foot Trailer Backing competition where the participants had to back up the manual 40-foot trailer truck without hitting any orange cones aligned to make a path and ended with Ammo Academics where an Airman, Non-Commissioned Officer and Senior Noncommissioned Officer from the squadrons competed in a "Jeopardy"-style game answering questions about the Ammo career field.

Other events included a 25-pound practice bomb toss, a 500-pound practice bomb drag, female and male trailer pull, four person relay, flatbed truck cross load and female and male ammo can carries.

"The Ammo Olympics helped raise morale, built camaraderie, offered up some friendly competition amongst each squadron and of course earned the winners some bragging rights," said Staff Sgt. Jason Newton, 649th MUNS, coordinator of the Ammo Olympics.

Following the Ammo Olympics there was an Ammo Call, where the Ammo troops were able to eat and get to know one another.

"It's a laid-back environment and gives junior ranks and higher ranks an opportunity to get to know one another and a chance for all of us to meet new people and make Ammo a better place," said Staff Sgt. Justin Chambers, 505th Combat Sustainment Squadron.

Newton said that with the success and positive feedback of this year's Ammo Olympics they are hoping to make it an annual event at Hill.
