Commentary: For Airmen, extraordinary things happen every day

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- As military members, most of us understand we're a part of something special. I'm not sure I realized the full reality of just how unique our profession is until I stepped away from it. I didn't stay away long, but when I returned, it was with a new sense of appreciation.

I served almost 10 years on active duty, but currently enjoy the privilege of serving part-time in the Air Force Reserve as an individual mobilization augmentee. My full-time career is in the private sector working for a large financial management corporation.

OO-ALC chief of staff retires

After 33 years in a career of federal service, the chief of staff for the Ogden Air Logistics Center retired at the Hill Aerospace Museum, Jan. 29. Aksel Aydoner began his service in 1976 with the Air Force and later became an operations and research analyst and mathematical statistician as a civilian in the Engineering Division at the OO-ALC. Eventually assigned to his current position, he served under the direction of the two previous commanders of the OO-ALC, and Maj. Gen.

February is Children's Dental Health Month

It is never too early to care for a child's teeth! Dental health starts at a very early age and properly caring for children's teeth and gums can prevent many dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.

Infants' gums and teeth can be cleaned using a wet washcloth or piece of gauze. A child's first dental visit should coincide with their first birthday. This allows the dentist to look for any dental abnormalities, and to educate the parents about an appropriate dental hygiene regimen.

Black History Month 'Ethnic Taster' today

Today, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., a food tasting event, "Ethnic Taster," will be held in the Hill Air Force Base Chapel Annex in conjunction with Black History Month and events are set through Feb. 23. Food set up is at 10:30 a.m.

The key event planned in February is a luncheon, Feb. 16, with speaker, Maj. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins, Defense Information Systems Agency vice director.

The February 2010 events theme is "The History of Black Economic Empowerment."

Hill Air Force Base has gained its newest senior enlisted officer to serve as liaison between the enlisted force and Team Hill senior leadership. Chief Master Sgt.

Feb. 15 power outage for cable racking

There will be a power outage affecting multiple facilities on Feb. 15, beginning at 7 a.m. and lasting 10 hours, in order to install new cable racking and fire tape in manholes.

Those facilities to be affected include:

Buildings 249, 250, 245, 252, 240 and 243.

Chill on the Hill for some winter fun!

In celebration of the Year of the Air Force Family the 75th Force Support Squadron will be holding a basewide Chill on the Hill event at Hubbard Golf Course on Saturday, Feb. 6, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Author to speak at Hill's first transformation symposium

Hill Air Force Base's Transformation/Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century Division will be hosting its inaugural Transformation Symposium on March 1 at the Base Theater, Building 441, starting at 7:30 a.m. Nationally acclaimed author Salome Thomas-El will be the keynote speaker for this event.

Thomas-El is an inner-city principal from Philadelphia who mentored his students through motivation and strategic thinking. In his books "I Choose to Stay" and "The Immortality of Influence," Thomas-El reveals methods that turned failing students into world champions of chess.
