Farr West seeks replacement after death of longtime mayor

FARR WEST — Following the recent death of Mayor Jimmie Papageorge, city council members are looking for a replacement to fill the year remaining on his term.

Councilman Paul Dinsdale remembers Papageorge as a hands-on mayor who worked tirelessly on behalf of Farr West and its residents.

The city is accepting applications to fill the mayor vacancy, said Councilman Tim Shupe.

New showdown in Syracuse, this time over hiring of police chief

SYRACUSE — The process of hiring a new police chief in this community appears to be creating a political firestorm along familiar lines.

The storm appears to be another showdown between Mayor Jamie Nagle and several city council members, notably Karianne Lisonbee and Brian Duncan.

The two sides clashed earlier this year when the council went about the process of hiring a new fire chief.

Lisonbee, Duncan and Councilman Larry Shingleton want to review potential candidates for the police chief’s job, but the process may not give them that chance until it’s time to vote on Chief Brian Wallace’s replacement.

Weber County hiring economic development director, hoping fresh eye will attract businesses

OGDEN — The Weber County Commission wants to change the way business is done in the county.

The Board of County Commissioners announced this week that it is rethinking “the business model upon which the county’s economic development efforts operate.”

The county hopes to diversify its economic development efforts and will hire someone in-house to accomplish this.

MORGAN — After beating out 22 other applicants, Blaine Gehring officially got his start as Morgan County’s new planning and development services department director on March 12.

Committee named to find new WSU president; input meetings set

SALT LAKE CITY — A 21-member search committee has been named to assist the state Board of Regents in the search for a new president of Weber State University.

The search committee will host public hearings to gather suggestions and input for establishing the criteria used to consider candidates. The committee will also review material submitted by applicants and recommend three to five finalists for Regents’ consideration.

Millner resigning as WSU president but staying to teach

OGDEN — Weber State University President F. Ann Millner may be stepping down, but she won’t be leaving campus.

Millner, who has worked at Weber State for 30 years, including a decade as president, plans to teach in the university’s Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Professions.

North Ogden faces recent loss of third city official with finance director's resignation

NORTH OGDEN — Finance Director Debbie Cardenas has resigned after eight years with the city. She will take a job as the finance director with the city of Mesquite, Nev. Her last day will be March 23.

Cardenas is the third top city official to resign in the last several months.

Syracuse to add attorney, engineer to city staff

SYRACUSE -- City staff will soon add a full-time attorney and a full-time engineer.

The city council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to fund the additions to staff on a full-time basis in a session highlighted by contentious debate and a question of whether lame duck council members should be voting on the matter.
