NHL meets with IIHF again on Olympic issue

NEW YORK — Two days of talks between the NHL and international hockey officials wrapped up Friday with signs that the league will wind up sending its players to the 2014 Sochi Games.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and International Ice Hockey Federation President Rene Fasel met for about 2½ hours after a 90-minute get-together Thursday night. No new talks were scheduled, but the sides are expected to meet again.

OGDEN — The Board of Commissioners of Weber County on Tuesday approved a five-year contract with the Ogden Mustangs hockey team for use of the Ice Sheet.

PETA critical of condor escape at hockey game

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling on the minor league Bakersfield Condors to stop displaying live condors at its hockey games.

The animal welfare group issued a statement Tuesday in response to a game last week in which an Andean condor escaped from a handler and slid on the ice as the national anthem played.

The rare bird of prey — with a wingspan of several feet — is the mascot for the Bakersfield Condors.

First-place Junior Steelheads pummel Mustangs

OGDEN — It wasn’t hard to understand why the Idaho Junior Steelheads are the best team in the Western States Hockey League as they came to Ogden and swept the Mustangs over a two-game set on Friday and Saturday night.

Are Minnesota Gophers the best women’s hockey team ever?

MINNEAPOLIS — At the University of Minnesota, just a slap shot away from Mariucci Arena and Williams Arena, there’s a team that operates in the shadows of the nation’s No. 1-ranked men’s hockey team and two basketball programs riding roller-coaster seasons.

Gophers women’s hockey coach Brad Frost has called his team “the best-kept secret in town.”

‘Miracle On Ice’ jersey going to auction in NYC

NEW YORK — Mike Eruzione’s sensational winning goal against the Soviet hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics will forever be remembered as the “Miracle On Ice” — perhaps the greatest sporting moment of the 20th century.

More than a generation later, the 58-year-old Eruzione is parting with his iconic No. 21 USA jersey, hockey stick and other Olympic paraphernalia. Dallas-based Heritage Auctions is selling the items in New York on Feb. 23, the day after the 33rd anniversary of the historic game.

Proud NHL fans refuse to get iced out of action

The boycotts were threatened. The irate tweets were posted.

NHL fans were fed up with labor strife updates and they weren’t coming back to the sport they loved once the lockout was lifted.

Except that they did. In most homes and arenas, they came in record numbers, unable to stay away for that first faceoff.

The fans partied in Nashville, Tenn., where $1 hot dogs helped woo Predators fans back to Bridgestone Arena.

NHL 2013 season: 10 things To know

The lockout that lasted 119 days has ended, the new collective bargaining agreement is in place and the NHL is finally about to play games again after hastily arranged weeklong training camps around the league. Here are 10 questions and answers about the upcoming season:

NHL returns, but TV viewers may come back slower

NEW YORK — Hockey fans will click their bitterness or forgiveness over the NHL lockout by whether they tune into the games on TV.

Then again, if the shortened season ends with, say, a Rangers-Red Wings final, even the most aggrieved of them might have a hard time staying away.

L.A. Kings primed to defend Stanley Cup title

LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Quick stood at the edge of the rink and looked up at the Staples Center roof. Several large banners were rolled up tight against the rafters, just waiting to be unfurled.

Although the new ice was chilly, the Los Angeles Kings goalie warmed up at the sight.

“It’ll be good to see those,” Quick said. “And then we can finally put it out of our minds and get back to work.”
