NHL, union spend day on conference calls

NEW YORK — Lots of questions, but still no answers in the NHL labor fight.

NHL makes new offer; lockout enters critical stage

NEW YORK — The NHL made a new offer to the players’ association, hoping to spark talks toward ending the long lockout and saving the hockey season.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Friday the league presented its proposal Thursday and was waiting for a response. The sides haven’t met in person since a second round of talks with a federal mediator broke down Dec. 13.

DeCock: Save NHL season, then tweak the playoffs

If the NHL can stop destroying itself long enough to get a deal done in time to save the season, this is as good a time as any to propose some changes to help the league get back on its feet. Nothing sells the game of hockey like a home playoff game.

So as the NHL emerges from the lockout, why not tweak the playoff format to give more teams a chance to host a playoff game? By adding a one-time-only preliminary round, another eight teams would make the playoffs, giving a bigger chunk of the league reason to get excited.

Utahn Trevor Lewis set to join Grizzlies

WEST VALLEY CITY – Utah Grizzlies coach and director of hockey operations Kevin Colley announced Monday that the team has agreed to terms with Utah native and Los Angeles Kings forward Trevor Lewis.

Mustangs pick up much-needed WSHL victory

OGDEN – In just his second start of the season Ogden goalie Colby Atkinson stonewalled the Moose as the Mustangs shutout Salt Lake City 5-0 at The Ice Sheet on Friday night in WSHL play.

While Atkinson’s last minutes were on Sept. 23, he managed to turn away all nine Salt Lake shots behind a tenacious defense that helped the Mustangs to their first win since Nov. 30.

Mustangs swept by Junior Steelheads in weekend series

Idaho outscored the Mustangs 18-7 as Ogden dropped a three-game set to the league-leading Junior Steelheads 4-6, 2-7, and 1-5 in Boise over the weekend.

Idaho forward Dominik Gabaj logging six goals and nine points as Steelhead goalie Blake Mendenhall picked up three wins.

NHL rejects players’ offer to break labor impasse

NEW YORK — The NHL and the players’ association are further apart than ever before.

Union executive director Donald Fehr began the first of his two news conferences Thursday night by proclaiming he believed the sides had agreements on such issues as actual dollars, and then returned moments later to reveal the NHL rejected everything his side offered.

Mustangs experience highs and lows in weekend split with Moose

OGDEN — It was a roller coaster weekend for the Mustangs as they split a two-game set with the visiting Salt Lake Moose 4-0, 6-5 at the Weber County Ice Sheet Friday and Saturday night.

Sean Haltam and Dusty Watt nabbed three points apiece for Ogden with a goal and pair of assists each as the Mustangs lead the in-state rivalry with a 4-1-1 record against the Moose.

Mustangs host Toys for Tots drive at Friday, Saturday games

OGDEN – The Ogden Mustangs Junior A hockey team has announced its annual Toys for Tots toy drive, set for Friday and Saturday at The Ice Sheet.

Fans are encouraged to bring new toys to donate to Toys for Tots both games. Fans will receive one free admission per donated toy. All fans are also encouraged to bring stuffed animals Saturday, to toss on the ice after the first Mustangs goal. All toys and stuffed animals will be donated to Toys for Tots Ogden chapter.

NHL lockout threatens entire hockey season

The National Hockey League season was supposed to be in full swing by now.

Instead, like the NFL in 2011 and the NBA last season, the NHL is mired in a labor dispute, with the owners locking out the players and — so far — wiping out more than two months of the season.

NHL cancels more games; All-Star weekend off

This round of cuts also included the elimination of the All-Star Weekend, which was scheduled for Jan. 26 and 27 in Columbus, Ohio. Even if the two sides would reach an agreement that allows for a shortened season, the game would likely be canceled as a compressed schedule is sorted out.

Mustangs split weekend pair with Moose

OGDEN — The Mustangs picked up their eighth road win on Friday and split a feisty two-game series with the Salt Lake Moose over the weekend with a 5-1, 1-3 effort that now gives Ogden the third most team points in the Western States Hockey League at 26.

Christian Kraus and Olle Vennstrom each logged a pair of goals on Friday night and Eryn Siracusa added three assists in the Ogden win.

As NHL lockout continues, more eyes turn to AHL

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Bare-chested and dripping with sweat after a brief morning skate, Syracuse Crunch left winger Cory Conacher stood at the edge of the rink and tested the feel of a new hockey stick.

"Are there illegal curves in this league," Conacher asked Friday with a devilish smile before retreating to the dressing room in the bowels of the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Pair of late goals lift Weber State over San Jose State

OGDEN – A pair of third-period goals from Weber State’s Josh Giudice and Jeremiah Holmes sent Friday’s game with the fifth-ranked San Jose State Spartans into overtime and an eventual 4-3 shootout win for the Wildcats.

As shootouts are primarily for show in the American Collegiate Hockey Association the game officially ended as a tie, but try telling that to the roaring Wildcat faithful at The Ice Sheet after watching their squad come from behind against one of the best teams in the region.

WSU hockey posts strong first half; still eyeing D-I status

OGDEN — With the American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament in their sights, the Weber State club hockey team burned through the first half of the season, boasting a 12-4-2 record; third best in the nation.

With the strong first-half performance the Wildcats are ranked ninth among Division II schools, a feat that coach Joe Pfleegor says is incredible.
