Marketplace of India raises school funds

OGDEN -- Handicrafts, artwork and exotic spices are among the wares found at the Marketplace of India on Saturday.

The market, a fundraiser for a school in India, is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Your Community Connection, 2261 Adams Ave.

Other items will include new and gently used clothing, jewelry, henna painting, food and snacks, cookbooks and global handicrafts from Ten Thousand Villages.

Sponsored by the American Endowment for Education in India, the event's proceeds will be donated to the Divya Daya Chand English Medium School. The school was founded by and is run by Anand Dyal-Chand, former vice president of Weber State University, and his wife, Alda.

More than 350 students attend the school in a poor rural area; most of them are children of day laborers in the sugar cane fields.

Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children and includes an Indian lunch.
