The city’s annual holiday breakfast

The city is looking for groups who are interested in fundraising via the annual Fourth of July breakfast.

Recently, the breakfast has been a non-profit, volunteer effort. A few years ago the event was used as a fundraiser for local youth groups. Centerville is thinking of returning to the fundraising approach for this year’s breakfast.

Any interested community groups should contact the city with a proposal for sponsoring and delivering the breakfast event.

Christmas trees, dusty decorations may trigger allergies

Time to pull the boxes out of the attic, hang up the wreath and wrap your house in lights and garland. Holiday decorations are making their annual debut, to the misery of some who suffer from asthma and allergies.

"You disturb dust and other debris that hasn't been touched for a year and it can certainly cause problems," says Dr. Richard Lockey, director of the allergy and immunology division at USF Health in Tampa.

If your symptoms have been under good control but lately you are short of breath, sneezing, wheezing or coughing, or have itchy, watery eyes or a runny or stuffy nose, the problem may be seasonal.

RIVERDALE -- You may know a lot of Christmas fans who can't stop themselves from listening to Christmas music at Halloween, but have you ever met a Halloween nut who can't help but decorate the Christmas tree with the angel of death?

Meet Judy Morgan. Jack the Pumpkin King's Christmas didn't work out only because there aren't more Judy Morgans in the world.

Morgan begins decorating for Halloween in August. It takes 10 days just to cover the walls of her home at 1236 W. 4500 South in plastic that looks like black, Gothic bricks. By the time she's done, every square foot of her house is occupied by a Frankenstein, vampire, witch, ghost or other monster. That includes the bedrooms and bathrooms.

The passion of Sister Dixon ... fer sure

Sister Dottie S. Dixon may not be a smart woman, but she knows what love is.

“I’m a simple Mormon girl, born and raised in Spanish Fark, Utah,” Dottie said, in an interview by e-mail.

(The spelling and punctuation are her own. We did downsize her overzealous capitalization.)

“I am a 10th generation Mormon. I am married ta Don Dixon fer 37 years, and we are the proud parents of a gay son Donnie P. Dixon. I am a accidental activist, but now stand fer the minoritized and miniaturized peoples of the world.”
