Homecoming

(ERIN HOOLEY/Standard-Examiner) Ream’s has eight stores throughout Utah, and the Layton store at 1040 N. Main St. is the largest, with its wall of boots and jeans displaying more than 2,000 pairs of boots and thousands of jeans.

Ream's hits the mainstream: Western fashion gains in popularity

LAYTON – Western fashion has been around a long time, but those in the business are beginning to see more cross-over into regular fashion.

Jodi Jones, store manager at the Layton Ream’s Boots & Jeans, was surprised to see so many girls looking for boots to go with homecoming dresses, and even brides searching for boots to match their wedding dress.

It hasn’t always been like that, especially since Western wear has always been about a year-and-a-half behind the fashion world, according to Brian Hulce, regional manager for Ream’s. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that Western fashion seemed to catch up.

The last U.S. soldiers rolled out of Iraq across the border to neighboring Kuwait at daybreak Sunday, whooping, fist bumping and hugging each other in a burst of joy and relief.

Extra-special homecoming royalty at Ben Lomond

OGDEN -- When Gerri Brown learned her son, Trey, had been nominated to be homecoming king at Ben Lomond High School, she asked if students were being nice or making fun of him.

Her first instinct was to protect her son. Trey has gone through the special education program in the Ogden School District starting with preschool, and parents of special-needs kids fear the taunts their kids may receive. Brown needn't have worried.

"I found out it was absolutely nice," she said Thursday night after Trey and fellow special-needs student Alexis Martinez were announced as Ben Lomond's 2011 Homecoming Royalty, chosen by the vote of the student body.

(ELAINE THOMPSON/The Associated Press) Amanda Knox, left, is comforted by her sister, Deanna Knox, during a news conference shortly after her arrival at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in Seattle. It’s been four years since the University of Washington student left for the study abroad program in Perugia and landed in prison. The group Friends of Amanda Knox and others have been awaiting her return since an Italian appeals court on Monday overturned her conviction of sexually assaulting and killing her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.
