Homeless count in Weber expanded

OGDEN — The Weber Housing Authority expanded its head count of the homeless this year from one night to a week in hopes of finding every person they can.

America First donates $19,000 to help less fortunate

RIVERDALE -- America First Credit Union distributed over $19,000 through its Community Assistance Program in 2011 to seven organizations that help the homeless and less fortunate.

CCS runs low on stimulus funds to fight homelessness

OGDEN -- When it comes to fighting against homelessness, Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah is losing its strong arm.

The agency is spending the last of its American Recovery Act funds, sometimes referred to as stimulus money, that it has been using for a Homeless Prevention and Recovery Program (HPRP) and a Rapid Rehousing Program in Weber County.

The organization received about $1 million to help with this need and it will run out of that money next month.

Girl Scouts brave cold to empathize with homeless

OGDEN -- Spending a night in a box was on 10th-grader Kiley Matthews' bucket list.

Now she can scratch that off.

She and about 17 other Girl Scouts spent Friday night sleeping outside in cardboard boxes just big enough for them, their blankets and animal-shaped pillows. The sleepover was meant to show them firsthand what it's like to be one of Utah's thousands of homeless. There were 14,351 people who were homeless throughout the state as of the annual head count in January.

Weber County trust fund helps St. Anne's house the homeless

OGDEN -- St. Anne's Center can better help homeless families after receiving on Wednesday $100,000 from the Weber County Homeless Trust Fund.

This is the first money from the trust fund to help the homeless, said Bill Cochran, chairman of the fund's board of trustees. The fund was established in 2004, when Ogden sold a building at what is now Business Depot Ogden and set aside the proceeds of $1.3 million.

Freezing weather on the doorstep of Top of Utah

OGDEN -- The National Weather Service says Monday's warm and sunny weather was the last of that sort of thing for the foreseeable future, which means it is also time for the homeless shelters to gear up for heavier use.
