Police probe Churchill Downs death as homicide

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Police suspect homicide in the death of a racetrack worker whose body was discovered just yards from the barn of this year's Kentucky Derby winner, although investigators said there was no apparent link to the storied annual race.

Video shows police removing Stewart from crime scene

OGDEN — Policemen dragging wounded shooting suspect Matthew Stewart into the street is among the stark images on dash-cam video released Tuesday of a fatal Jan. 4 drug raid.

The Standard-Examiner obtained videos from the Riverdale and South Ogden police departments through a public records request.

In addition, the newspaper received seven Ogden police dash-cam videos Monday that record the chaotic scene following a raid by the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force at Stewart’s home at 3268 Jackson Ave.

OGDEN — The scene unfolds in stark black and white, with a police car barreling through ghostly streets in east-central Ogden en route to six officers shot during a Jan. 4 drug raid.

Exclusive dash-cam video obtained Monday by the Standard-Examiner through a state public records request shows the chaotic scene Ogden law officers encountered when they arrived at 8:42 p.m. outside the home of Matthew David Stewart, 3268 Jackson Ave.

Stewart, who was wounded in the shootout, is accused of killing Ogden police officer Jared Francom and injuring five others during the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force knock-and-announce raid.

Stewart's newest lawyer files another motion against seizure

OGDEN — Matthew David Stewart’s newest lawyer has filed another motion challenging the prosecution’s seizure of the home of the police shooting suspect.

Emily Swenson’s first motion, filed last week, rankled both the prosecution and one of Stewart’s public defenders. Prosecutors said it was the latest bid by Stewart’s defense team to depict the prosecution as skirting the law.

Public defender Ryan Bushell described Swenson’s motions as frustrating and muddying the public’s understanding.

Nathan Sloop waives preliminary hearing

FARMINGTON — A judge set a felony arraignment hearing for the man charged with the murder of 4-year-old Ethan Stacy.

Nathan Sloop, 33, carrying a large, clear, plastic bag filled with legal documents, appeared Tuesday before Judge Glen Dawson, who set May 22 for the hearing. At that time, Sloop is expected to enter either a plea of not guilty or guilty to the charges stemming from the boy’s death on May 9, 2010.

Sloop, and his wife, Stephanie Sloop, 29, both of Layton, are each charged with aggravated murder, second-degree felony child abuse, second-degree felony obstruction of justice and third-degree felony abuse or desecration of a body.

Officials say death of teen along Jordan River not a random attack

DRAPER — After the body of a teen girl was found in the Jordan River on Sunday and although there have been assaults on joggers along river trails in other parts of the state, an official says the most recent incident does not seem to be a random attack.

Bountiful woman appears in court after fatally stabbing boyfriend

FARMINGTON — A public defender said he has advised Shannon Ryan Sander not to discuss her murder case with anyone but her appointed attorney.

Sander, 43, of Bountiful, appeared in 2nd District Court for her first court appearance on Friday. Several of her family members were in the courtroom. She is charged with first-degree felony murder in the stabbing death of Michael Richard Dunn, 52, on Tuesday. If convicted, she could be sentenced to serve 15 years to life in the Utah State Prison.

She is being held in the Davis County Jail without bail. Another hearing is set for March 9.

Munn prepares for hearings over body found in her yard

OGDEN — Charged with obstruction of justice after a body was found buried in her yard, Sarah Munn is considering hiring one of the state’s best-known defense attorneys.

A status conference Tuesday in Ogden’s 2nd District Court for Munn, 31, was continued to Feb. 28. Her public defender, Martin Gravis, said Tuesday she is considering hiring prominent Salt Lake City lawyer Ron Yengich.

Yengich is already representing Munn on a Davis County charge of harboring an escapee. She was charged last September after telling police she had not seen Daniel Rivera, the father of her three children, since he walked away from a work crew while in the Weber County Jail in August. Police later learned Munn had been with Rivera on Aug. 23, 2011.

Missing man buried in Roy was stabbed to death

ROY — A man found buried Thursday in the backyard of a Roy home was stabbed to death, police say.

Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham on Tuesday identified the man as Victor Flores, a 25-year-old California resident who had moved to Utah and was reported missing by his family last May.

A homicide investigation has been launched as a result of the discovery of Flores’ body, Whinham said.
