Hooper sports its new crown jewels

HOOPER — Residents here already believe their city is a priceless gem.

But now, they’ve got a representation to prove their beliefs.

It’s a new tiara to be worn by their Miss Rodeo Hooper, also referred to as Miss Hooper Tomato Days. The crown will be passed down to the new queen each year.

Racing dogs a highlight of Hooper Tomato Days

HOOPER — Sam, a red heeler, is the 2012 Grand Champion of the Hooper Tomato Days dog races, held at the Hooper Park rodeo arena. He won first place in the medium dog division and then went on to win the overall spot, netting his owner a $100 first prize.

This year’s excitement grew as 127 dogs of all sizes, shapes and breeds lined up at the gate, where their owners paid their $3 registration fee. Then dogs and owners walked through and on to the holding area, awaiting their turn to take off.

HOOPER — A two-day competition begins tonight to choose the Hooper Tomato Days Rodeo Queen who will reign over the community’s Labor Day celebration.

New Hooper military memorial to be built after 5 years of effort

HOOPER — It started when Bette Wilson couldn’t find her neighbors’ names on the city’s war memorial in Hooper Park, and it will end July 4 with the dedication of a new memorial. The dedication ends four years of hard work by Wilson and others in the small community.

Let 'em loose! Hooper Tomato Days dog race draws crowd

HOOPER -- When Lily, a 2-year-old white shorkie, sprinted in front of the rest of the dogs, Megan Hayden was a bit surprised.

"She doesn't really run much," said Hayden, 14, of Roy. "She's really a lazy dog."
