Barn fire kills 22 show horses

With snow on the ground and the temperature hovering around 20 degrees, Art Hahn made sure every door in the New Jersey barn where he kept 22 trophy show horses was closed securely before he headed home Friday afternoon.

"Everything was locked up so the horses would stay a little warmer," Hahn said.

But shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, Hahn awoke to a neighbor pounding on his door. He looked across the street at the barn: It was engulfed in flames.

500 year old tradition in Spain

Christian Courtwright, the Humane Officer of the Geauga County Humane Society’s Rescue Village, stands with Wally, a 9-year-old standard bred horse, at the animal shelter in South Russell, Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. After being tied to a buggy rail overnight outside the Walmart store in Middlefield, Ohio in November when his Amish owner decided to go out on the town, Walmart employees called local police and tended to the horse for the weekend until Rescue Village was called in to shelter the horse. Court action this week put Wally in the permanent custody of the animal shelter, and he will soon be up for adoption to a new home. (AP Photo/Amy Sancetta)

With horse numbers falling, Legacy refocuses efforts

FARMINGTON -- With Davis County home construction putting the squeeze on open pasture lands where horses once grazed -- forcing some horse owners to relocate -- Davis County Legacy Events Center is diversifying the groups it attracts.

Being able to rely on renting out Legacy Events Center's indoor and outdoor arenas to horse riders to supplement the operating cost of the buildings is no longer feasible, officials say.

Horses, once prized, are paying for the dire economy

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Black as night and 18 hands high, Clemente trotted up and down the pen as the auctioneer at Mike's Livestock rattled off bids machine-gun style.

The barnyard scents of alfalfa, leather and sweat wafted through the cavernous auction hall just outside Riverside, Calif., where Clemente and dozens of other horses paraded before bleachers overflowing with bargain-seekers, sellers and gawkers on a cold weekend night.

There were whispers of a "killer buyer" lurking outside, buying up swaybacks and broken-down mares to be shipped off for slaughter. A trio of amateur Mexican-style rodeo riders eyed horses suitable for hogtying and tail twisting.

Cattle owners happy to have option to slaughter horses

ABILENE, Texas -- To Cheryl Moore, co-owner of the Stephenville Cattle Co. sales barn here, when horse slaughter ceased in the United States five years ago, legislators took an entire industry hostage.

"They held us captive to foreign countries -- Mexico and Canada," she said.

Congress quietly lifted a ban on funding horsemeat inspections, which means horses could be butchered again in the U.S. for human consumption.
