Arizona boy thankful after rare transplant in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A 13-year-old Arizona boy is expressing thankfulness after receiving a new heart and liver in a rare procedure at a Utah hospital.

Roy resident Verona Gwen Garrard, born April 30, 1934, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden after an extended illness. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Roy Central Stake Center, 4900 S. 2000 West. A viewing will be held at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 S. 1900 West, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday before the service. OGDEN — Officials at McKay-Dee Hospital announced Sunday the release of Ogden Police Officer Kasey Burrell.

Live music at VA hospital helps those suffering from PTSD

FRESNO, Calif. -- The hospital was built in the years after World War II. Its ceilings are low, corridors long and corners sharp -- all possible stress triggers for those who have been in combat.

Not to mention that a hospital waiting room can make anyone edgy.

But the Veterans Affairs hospital in Fresno has found a way to make the experience easier: live music.

LOS ANGELES -- Actress Heather Locklear remained at a hospital in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles on Friday and is being evaluated by doctors, the hospital said.

Fire in India kills 89 as hospital staff flees

KOLKATA, India -- Fleeing medical staff abandoned patients to a raging fire that killed 89 people Friday as smoke and flames poured through the seven-story building in eastern India, officials said.

Police arrested six hospital officials on charges of culpable homicide in Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta. Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of the state of West Bengal, ordered the hospital's license withdrawn. The hospital denied any violations of safety measures.

SMITHFIELD — A Smithfield man has been arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after his infant son was hospitalized with severe skull and brain injuries.

Shooting victim's condition is stable

CENTERVILLE -- The condition of a shooting victim has been upgraded to stable, police said Tuesday.

Shot boy reported to be improving

FRUIT HEIGHTS -- Police are reporting the condition of a 15-year-old boy from Fruit Heights who was accidentally shot in the head Saturday as improving.

Davis County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Harper said the family had reported that the boy was responding to voices of family members and health care providers Sunday.
