'House' pulls the plug

An odd bit of swag arrived via mail the other day, courtesy of the Fox network. Sandwiched between two heavy chunks of acrylic glass was a dark slice of film, no wider than a Post-it note. It was a commemorative X-ray from the set of "House," the landmark medical series that pulls the plug on its eight-year run Monday night.

Farr West house to be demolished was built around pioneer cabin

FARR WEST — A Top of Utah man who started to demolish what he thought was a frame house discovered it was built around a pioneer-era log cabin.

Now, Randy Chambers plans to restore the cabin, which a history sleuth determined was built by an ancestor of his in the 1860s.

Bishop bill for Homeland Security in border parks causing contention

LOS ANGELES -- House Republicans are backing legislation in Congress to give the Department of Homeland Security control of more than 50 national parks and forests within 100 miles of the U.S. borders.

The legislation involves a sweep of land along the frontier with Canada and Mexico, but exempts state land, private property and federal holdings used for mining, livestock grazing and timber harvesting. The new authority would carve through 54 national parks, including Joshua Tree, Saguaro, Acadia and Glacier.

Fire destroys garage on Harrison Boulevard

OGDEN — Fire caused double trouble this week for Maria Sanchez.

A Harrisville home that Sanchez was living in was damaged Tuesday when an adjacent house at 683 N. Washington Blvd., Harrisville, was destroyed by fire.

Sanchez moved from the Harrisville home and was preparing Friday to move into another rental house at 2717 Harrison Blvd. when a detached garage behind that dwelling caught fire.

Home, at last: Have a Heart helps North Ogden couple

NORTH OGDEN -- Joyful emotions ran high Thursday afternoon as Marjorie and George Rice were handed keys to their new North Ogden home, courtesy of the Have a Heart program.

Flags covered the front lawn of the new home, signifying George's four years of service in the U.S. Air Force and his 28 years working as a civilian at Hill Air Force Base.

This is the first home the Have a Heart program has helped with this year, but four homes were awarded last year. Currently in its 11th year, the Have a Heart program is a service arm of the Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors and Northern Wasatch Home Builders Association. Have a Heart contributors build new-construction homes for people with low incomes, those requiring wheelchair accessibility, military and special-needs families.

House rejects measure to continue US role in Libya

WASHINGTON  -- The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected a measure giving President Barack Obama the authority to continue the U.S. military operation against Libya, a major repudiation of the commander in chief.

The vote was 295-123, with Obama losing the support of 70 of his Democrats one day after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made a last-minute plea for the mission.

High-schoolers build house for Layton family

LAYTON -- Blake Noble's commute to work will soon be cut from 25 minutes to just one.

In June, Noble, a Layton police officer, and his family will move from Ogden into their new Layton home, which was built by students at Layton High School as part of a program with the Davis School District.

On Thursday, the Nobles were joined by officials from Layton and Davis School District, as well as the teacher and students who built the house, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate another completed home.

Hatch, Bishop push amendment to empower states

WASHINGTON D.C. -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Rob Bishop said Thursday they are co-sponsoring an amendment to the Constitution that would allow states to repeal laws and regulations implemented by the federal government.

The amendment has to be approved by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratified by three-fourths of the states to become law.

The amendment reads: "Any provision of law or regulation of the United States may be repealed by the several states, and such repeal shall be effective when the legislatures of two-thirds of the several states approve resolutions for this purpose that particularly describe the same provision or provisions of law or regulation to be repealed."

WASHINGTON — A House panel approved a defense bill early Thursday that would delay President Barack Obama's new policy allowing gays to serve openly in the military and limit the commander in chief's authority on slashing the nation's nuclear arsenal.
