BOISE — An extension cord hooked to an electric grill on a porch shorted out and started a house fire that killed five people Saturday morning, a northern Idaho fire official says.

Orofino Fire Chief Mike Lee said the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived after a neighbor reported the fire at 1:38 a.m.

He said smoke inhalation likely killed the two adults and three teens whose bodies were also badly burned in the blaze.

'Hero' dog saves owner but perishes in Layton blaze

LAYTON — Jake, a 13-year-old golden retriever/Lab mix, is a hero, said Layton Fire Chief Kevin Ward.

“He saved the woman’s life,” Ward said about the dog who did not make it out of a burning house Wednesday afternoon.

“I just can’t believe he did it,” said Ron Barningham, his eyes red from crying and his cheek wet with tears as he talked about the sacrifice the dog made to save his wife.

Good Ogden Samaritans report house fire

OGDEN — Firefighters on Wednesday were quick to respond to a small house fire at 149 2nd St. The male occupant of the house received medical treatment in an ambulance at the scene.The extent of his injuries was not known, said Ogden Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Splinter.

Fire damages Woods Cross home; two dogs revived

WOODS CROSS — A home sustained moderate damage and two dogs were revived by firefighters following a Friday night house fire at 1567 S. 700 West.

The call was received at 6:50 p.m., said South Davis Metro Fire Agency Deputy Chief Jeff Bassett.

A resident came home, opened the front door and noticed the dwelling was full of smoke, Bassett said. The man found fire in the basement, left the house and called 911.

Fire damages storage garage in Bountiful

BOUNTIFUL — A garage sustained heavy damage in a fire Saturday night.

The fire started about 6:30 p.m. at the residence at 1326 S. 200 West, said South Davis Metro Fire Agency Chief Jim Rampton.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, Rampton said, and no one had been in the garage for about a month. The garage was primarily used to store items, he said.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the garage, Rampton said.
