Utah archery hunts loom

It's time to dust off the bow and arrows and get ready for Utah's archery elk and deer hunts, which begin a month from today.

Both hunts start on Aug. 20, and it's likely that those who have already started preparing will have the most fun and successful outings.

All of the archery permits to hunt deer in Utah this year have been taken. But archery elk permits, which go on sale July 27, are unlimited.

Deadline nears for big game hunt permits

If you want to hunt for deer or other big game in Utah this fall, you need to get your application in soon.

Applications must be received at wildlife.utah.gov no later than 11 p.m. on March 3 (next Thursday) to be included in the draw for permits.

If you decide to apply, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recommends doing so before the last day of the application period. Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the DWR, says the amount of patience you have is the critical factor in deciding when to apply.

"If you apply before March 3, you should be able to get your application in fast," Tutorow said.

In fight against disease, not a deer hunt, but a culling

ZUMBRO FALLS, Minn. -- Here among some of Minnesota's most beautiful rolling hills and bending rivers, a small group of men gathered last week, unusual for them at this time of year, early February.

Unusual as well were the firearms they uncased, rifles mostly, with the odd shotgun toted as well. The men use the land primarily for deer hunting by archery, and they're serious about it, placing a multitude of stands throughout its 160 acres so that, on a given autumn morning or afternoon, a platform can be chosen that gives them an advantage, windwise.

Gun hunting, well, that's a second choice. And down here, during firearms deer season, it's accomplished by shotgun only, no rifles.

Kansas isn't flyover country when it comes to hunting season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dennis Scharadin didn't need a map to remind him that he was far from his home in Pennsylvania.

The minute he waded into a sea of rolling grass on a remote tract of land in north-central Kansas, he knew he was in a pheasant hunter's paradise.

"We don't have anything like this back home," said Scharadin, 64, an outdoors writer from Auburn, Pa. "We have a lot of forests and some pretty rugged land.
