SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's opener for deer season offered some beautiful weather but kept deer scattered at high elevation. That meant low success on opening day.
State wildlife biologists said few animals were checked at wildlife checkpoints across Utah on Saturday.
Mark Hadley, a spokesman for the state Department of Wildlife Resources, says activity on Saturday seemed slow and that the mild weather would require hunters to get off the roads and into the backcountry in search of deer.
A storm front heading to Utah on Monday likely will make it easier for hunters to spot their quarry.
The deer hunt is the state's most popular. More than 70,000 hunters, plus family and friends, were expected in Utah's forests and hills over the weekend.
