IndyCar: 'Limitless' racing factor in Vegas wreck

Las Vegas Motor Speedway's "limitless" racing surface was singled out Thursday as a significant factor in a "perfect storm" of conditions that led to the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon.

Wheldon was killed Oct. 16 during the series' season finale when his car sailed 325 feet through the air into a catchfence, and his head hit a post in the fence. The blow created a "non-survivable injury."

IndyCar removes Barnhart from race control

The IndyCar Series officially removed Brian Barnhart as head of race control Wednesday after a controversial season in which drivers publicly questioned his decisions.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said Barnhart will remain president of operations and oversee everything from officials to safety development and event logistics. Bernard is actively searching for a new race director, who will serve as the senior official in race control and regulate all on-track activity.

Rahal's small gesture is big gain for Wheldon fund

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It started with a small gesture by Graham Rahal, who wanted to raise money for Dan Wheldon's family by auctioning off his helmet from the IndyCar season finale.

He announced his intentions on Twitter and the response from the motorsports community was immediate and overwhelming. It didn't take Rahal long to realize he alone couldn't handle the outpouring of support for Wheldon, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner killed in the Oct. 16 race at Las Vegas.

Bruton Smith: IndyCar welcome to return to Vegas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Track owner Bruton Smith said Friday he would welcome IndyCar back to Las Vegas Motor Speedway if the series wants to return.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed in the opening laps of the Oct. 16 season finale at Las Vegas. It was IndyCar's first visit to the track since 2000.

Mann defends expertise of Las Vegas IndyCar field

IndyCar rookie Pippa Mann rejects the idea that the drivers in the Las Vegas finale did not have enough experience on ovals.

Mann was one of 15 drivers involved in a fiery accident in which two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed.

AP Interview: Franchitti set on honoring Wheldon

INDIANAPOLIS -- In the frantic moments after Dan Wheldon's fatal accident, the cruel stakes of auto racing again hit a heartbroken Dario Franchitti.

Franchitti lost his best friend, Greg Moore, in the 1999 season finale. Now, another friend is gone, prompting questions about the safety of their sport and whether the reward is ever worth the risk.

NASCAR drivers say they can't dwell on perils while in car despite IndyCar death

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Matt Kenseth doesn't spend a lot of time thinking about the dangers involved on race day.

"If that was something that I did think about, then I would find something else to do," Kenseth said Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

"Certainly it is something you think about when you are building race cars. NASCAR is constantly trying to make the tracks, pit road, our cars and everything safer.

Wheldon remembered as 'a champion of our sport'

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Of all the indelible moments from Dan Wheldon's public memorial service -- fellow IndyCar drivers Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan serving as pallbearers, his father carrying his racing helmet and country music star Wynonna Judd singing two gripping songs -- the heart-wrenching letter from his wife cut deepest.

Susie Wheldon's letter to Dan left few eyes dry in the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg.

Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, died last Sunday in IndyCar's season finale at Las Vegas. He was remembered Saturday not only as a champion but as a devoted husband, caring father, loyal friend and beloved son. And one more thing: a neat freak.

$100,000 bonus for lead changes scrutinized

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- A promotion that promises a $100,000 bonus if there are 100 lead changes at Talladega Superspeedway is being scrutinized in the wake of Dan Wheldon's fatal accident.

Wheldon was killed in a 15-car accident last Sunday in the IndyCar season finale at Las Vegas. The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner was in that race chasing a $5 million prize that only Wheldon was eligible to win. The promotion was offered to any moonlighting driver who could win the race, and Wheldon qualified for it because he'd been out of a job all season.

Last month, Talladega officials offered $100,000 to the Sprint Cup drivers if there were 100 lead changes in Sunday's race. If the number is hit, the driver who takes the lead the most times will win the bonus.

Wheldon's death returns safety issue to forefront

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The death of Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon has sparked safety discussions throughout motorsports just as NASCAR heads to one of the fastest tracks on its circuit.

With Wheldon's death -- he was killed in a spectacular 15-car accident Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway -- comes intense scrutiny from a curious public that's often entertained by the crashes and multiple car pileups. Just last weekend, the crowd at Charlotte Motor Speedway roared with approval when five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson wrecked hard into the wall.

Wheldon's death overshadows Franchitti's title

LAS VEGAS -- Walking hand-in-hand with his wife, actress Ashley Judd, Dario Franchitti appeared to be in a daze, tears streaming down his face as he passed through the pit stalls at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Scotsman had just secured a place among IndyCar's all-time greats with his third straight series title and fourth overall, yet glory had taken a back seat to shock following the death of Dan Wheldon.

Wheldon's death should be IndyCar's Earnhardt moment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The horrifying death of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon in a 15-car crash Sunday in Las Vegas needs to serve as a wakeup call to that racing series -- its own sad version of an "Earnhardt moment."

Certainly, Wheldon was not nearly as well-known nor as accomplished as NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt, thought by many to be the best stock-car driver who ever lived. But both men died very public deaths while pursuing their sport -- Earnhardt in a last-lap crash at the 2001 Daytona 500 -- and both incidents occurred live on national television.

Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon mourned in Britain

EMBERTON, England -- Struggling to hold back tears, Clive Wheldon's voice quivered as he spoke about his son, "a true champion and a gentleman."

"Daniel was born to be a racer and yesterday left us doing what he loved to do," he said Monday outside the family home in the village of Emberton, a far cry from the high-powered world of auto racing in which his son became one of Britain's most famous exports.

News of Dan Wheldon's death at 33 following a massive and fiery crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300 dominated newspaper headlines and broadcasts in Britain on Monday.

Two victories in the Indianapolis 500 established him as one of the few Britons to master auto racing across the Atlantic. But Wheldon was far from a household name in Britain, where Formula One is the top motor sport and IndyCar receives little coverage.

Kanaan, Meira ready to race in different venue

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira are in the race of their lives.

They've already logged more than 10,000 miles of training -- and none of it has come behind the wheel of a race car.

No, this is not some crazy IndyCar endurance challenge, it's the next stop on their fitness tour: The Ironman World Championships at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
