Patrick finishing IndyCar run with eye on NASCAR

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Danica Patrick is ready for one last hurrah in IndyCars before she turns her attention entirely to her blossoming stock car career.

The IndyCar icon has raced a partial Nationwide schedule the past two seasons during her much-publicized transition to NASCAR. Her final open-wheel race is the IndyCar World Championships on Oct. 16 in Las Vegas, and then it's on to her full-time ride with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports.

"I'm ready for change," Patrick said Friday at Kansas Speedway, where she was preparing for Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

Test drivers like feel of 2012's new IndyCars

INDIANAPOLIS -- Scott Dixon likes the sound and safety features of the new IndyCars.

Dan Wheldon prefers the way they handle.

Will Power is all for the turbochargers.

Franchitti's dominance like Johnson's NASCAR run

SPARTA, Ky. -- Jimmie Johnson has won five consecutive championships, yet doesn't always get the proper recognition -- both in NASCAR and across all professional sports -- for such a remarkable feat.

The same could be said about Dario Franchitti.

Not so fast: Dixon makes it 3-way race for title

MOTEGI, Japan -- Just when it looked like Dario Franchitti and Will Power would run away from the field in the race for the IndyCar championship, Scott Dixon got back in the mix with a win at the Indy Japan 300.

Dixon's victory in the last IndyCar event to be held in Japan moved the Target Chip Ganassi driver to within 59 points of Power with two races to go. Power finished second at Motegi to overtake the points lead from reigning champion Franchitti, who is in second place 11 points back.

At age 71, Mario Andretti is anything but retired

BALTIMORE -- Some things never change. As you walk around the hospitality and pit areas at an IZOD IndyCar race you can still find Mario Andretti signing autographs more than five decades since he drove his first racecar in competitive open wheel racing.

Andretti, the most versatile American racecar driver in history, is at age 71, theoretically, long retired. But that's hard to prove.

Through four decades beginning in the 1960s he won four Indy Car championships and became the only driver in motorsports history to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), the Daytona 500 (1967) and the Formula One World Drivers' Championship (1978).

Moving from IndyCar? Stewart, Earnhardt pass on Danica Patrick rumors

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Tony Stewart didn't want to talk about Danica Patrick on Friday. Nor did Dale Earnhardt Jr.

They certainly were more concerned about getting their cars ready for Sunday's Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

But with reports circulating this week that Patrick will race for their teams in a move from IndyCar to NASCAR next season -- running fulltime on the Nationwide series and a limited Cup schedule -- Stewart and Earnhardt were asked about her anyway.

A.J. Foyt to stick with Honda engine in 2012

INDIANAPOLIS -- A.J. Foyt will do anything to win next season -- even if it takes a Japanese engine manufacturer to put him in Victory Lane.

Yes, IndyCar's career leader in victories and a major proponent of American racers said Tuesday his team will go with the Honda engine in 2012.

Indy invites Desert Storm vets to Brickyard 400

INDIANAPOLIS -- Veterans of the first Gulf War in Iraq are being invited to attend this year's Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Star reports city officials and race organizers will honor veterans of Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield veterans at the opening ceremonies July 31.

Tagliani predicts more crashes in Edmonton race

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Alex Tagliani says anyone who was surprised by the demolition derby at the Toronto IndyCar race can expect more of the same in the open-wheel circuit's next stop.

The Canadian predicts that the long straightaway into the 90-degree Turn 1 at Edmonton's new airport track will guarantee more crashes unless IndyCar modifies the controversial double-file restarts.

"In Edmonton, I expect multiple wrecks out here," Tagliani said Tuesday in Edmonton, where the recent closure of one runway, the first step in the eventual shutdown of the entire facility, forced organizers to redraw the circuit. Drivers will now navigate 13 turns, going counter-clockwise on a 2.3-mile course.

Iowa could host 2-for-1 IndyCar weekend in 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa -- One of the smallest markets in the IndyCar series could be in line to host one of its biggest weekends starting next year.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said the series is looking into the possibility of holding a doubleheader at Iowa Speedway next season that would award full championship points for each race.

Resilient Kimball up to speed as his Type 1 diabetes fuels 26-year-old to succeed

MILWAUKEE -- Placed smack-center on Charlie Kimball's steering wheel, a blood-glucose monitor stares into the cockpit of the race car like a digital Cyclops surrounded by all the usual gauges and buttons.

For the 26-year-old rookie driver, this device is no monster but a life-saver.

Power improving on ovals, boosting title hopes

WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Like many drivers who come from a road course racing background, Will Power had a fear factor to overcome as he first learned how to drive on ovals.

Since moving to Indy-style racing in 2005, Power gradually became comfortable with the high speeds, close proximity to walls and sustained G-forces involved in oval track racing.

He isn't scared -- and that's a little scary.

IndyCar's Ugly Duckling

WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- It's a gritty one-mile oval with its share of rough edges, set in the middle of a modest neighborhood just west of downtown.

No, the Milwaukee Mile isn't the prettiest or most polished racetrack around. And it nearly slipped off the motorsports map for good last year, when financial problems left it without a viable promoter or a date on the NASCAR or IndyCar schedules.

Racing's all in family for Marco Andretti

FORT WORTH, Texas -- When your name is Andretti, you know what it means to be a race car driver.

But young Marco Andretti once thought that was all it meant.

Hildebrand poised, ready to race after Indy defeat

MILWAUKEE -- Ever since a heartbreaking crash in the last turn of the last lap cost him victory at the Indianapolis 500, J.R. Hildebrand has been widely commended for the dignified way he handled defeat.
