Official: UDOT work to improve safety seen in 2012 fatality numbers

OGDEN — Deaths on Utah roads continue to trend downward, a new report shows.

The Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Highway Patrol released yearly traffic fatality statistics this week that show 215 people died on Utah’s roads during 2012, a 42 percent drop since 2000. In 2011, the state had 243 fatalities.

The number of fatalities in Utah hasn’t been this low since 1974, said UDOT Executive Director John Njord.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Johnson said for some unknown reason Darin L. Bennett lost control of his small passenger car and spun out on Interstate 15 near Layton Hills Mall. The car was almost at a complete stop when the semitrailer hit it. The accident happened at 7:20 a.m. and both vehicles were traveling north. Bennett who was from West Jordan, was flown by helicopter to a Salt Lake hospital. Traffic was at a stand-still for about 30 minutes. Johnson said the condition of the man is unknown. LAYTON — A 45-year-old man was flown to a Salt Lake hospital after his car was struck by a semitrailer Wednesday morning.

Farmington letter firm on West Davis Corridor interchange option

FARMINGTON — As the Utah Department of Transportation presses forward with the environmental study for the West Davis Corridor, Farmington’s elected officials are taking a hard stance about which option they want.

The city recently sent UDOT a detailed letter, outlining their preference for the Shepard Lane interchange option.

The letter, dated Nov. 20, was signed by Mayor Scott Harbertson and all five city council members.

Public hearings set on expanding I-15 express lanes in Top of Utah

ROY — Public hearings have been set for one of the biggest projects in Interstate 15 history.

The Utah Department of Transportation will hold two public hearings on its plan to extend the state’s express lane system throughout the Top of Utah.

UDOT Region One spokesman Vic Saunders said the first hearing is Thursday at the Hope Center, 5051 S. 2000 West, in Roy. The second is set for Nov. 8 at Woods Cross City Hall, 1555 S. 800 West. Both meetings will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Davis deputies respond to bizarre low-speed chase

LAYTON — Kaysville police arrested a 48-year-old woman from Houston on Wednesday night after what officers described as a bizarre low-speed chase.

The incident began around 10 p.m., on Interstate 15 northbound near Kaysville, said Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Harper.

Charlotte Lela Kibler was driving a small compact car in the emergency lane and was spotted by a motorist, who called 911.

Semi rolls late Monday night on I-15

OGDEN -- Shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, a semitruck was reported on its side at Mile Marker 343 on Interstate 15 northbound.

Toys, quarters litter I-15 after three-car crash

OGDEN — A three-car wreck tied up northbound traffic on Interstate 15 at the 21st Street exit for more than an hour Thursday afternoon while troopers picked up hundreds of stuffed toys and quarters, which spewed out of a minivan that rolled multiple times.

Blown tire catches fire on I-15 Monday

FARMINGTON — Members of the fire department were called to I-15 Monday night when a blown tire on a semi truck with three trailers burst into flames.

Hearing set for helping Interstate 15 keep up with population growth

PLEASANT VIEW — The need to widen Interstate 15 at the tip of the Top of Utah has moved up on the state’s priority list.

The Wasatch Front Regional Council will hold a special hearing to receive comments on an amendment to its 2011-2040 Regional Transportation Plan. The amendment includes moving a massive project to widen I-15 in northern Weber County and southern Box Elder County to phase 1 of the plan.

The project had been listed on phase 3 of the WFRC’s regional plan, which means it wouldn’t have been completed until around 2031-2041.

Two UDOT projects affecting Top of Utah traffic

WEST HAVEN — The busy road construction year continues in the Top of Utah as two projects are under way that figure to have quite an impact on local traffic.
