Woman's body found at Riverdale four-plex

RIVERDALE — Police are trying to identify a woman whose body was found Wednesday morning at a construction site in Riverdale.

The owner of a four-plex, at 1751 W. 4800 South, that was undergoing renovation arrived at 9:30 a.m. and found the body, said Police Lt. James Ebert.

SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert came to the defense of Lt. Gov. Greg Bell on Tuesday, saying he has full confidence in Bell and in Palmer DePaulis, head of the Department of Child and Family Services.

Bell is the subject of a Davis County investigation into allegations that he abused his power in a child-abuse case involving a neighbor. DePaulis has accused the lieutenant governor of interfering in a child-abuse investigation and undermining the agency.

Weiler works to close loophole brought to light by Swallow investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — A local lawmaker says all state employees should sing from the same songbook when it comes to employment opportunities outside their state position.

A bill to close a loophole limiting political appointees from doing outside consulting that would conflict with their state job cleared a Senate government operations committee Tuesday.

SB 83 is sponsored by Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross. Weiler admits it is an investigation into the actions of Attorney General John Swallow that exposed the loophole. Swallow engaged in outside consulting work while a top deputy in the attorney general’s office.

Man dies when hit by car in Ogden

OGDEN — Ogden police are investigating the death of a 50-year-old man who was hit by a car while crossing Wall Avenue at 26th Street late Monday.

Lt. Will Cragun said the victim, whose name was not released, was apparently crossing Wall Avenue at 7:47 p.m., “from the east and going to the west and he’s struck by a southbound vehicle in the right lane.”

He said the car was a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 22-year-old man who stayed at the scene of the accident.

Ogden police shooting ruled not justified

OGDEN — An Ogden police officer was not justified when he shot at a motorist in the parking lot of a local apartment complex.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office said in a prepared statement released late Friday afternoon that its investigation and a separate investigation by the Ogden Police Shooting Review Panel determined Officer Justin Kaufman’s use of deadly force was not warranted.

Kaufman, an eight-year veteran of the Ogden Police Department, remains on unpaid, administrative leave. The county attorney’s statement does not say whether he faces any charges in the shooting.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Lt. Gov. Greg Bell has been accused by a prominent cabinet member of interfering in a child abuse investigation and undermining the agency that was handling the case.

LAYTON — Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings is investigating Lt. Gov. Greg Bell over allegations he abused government powers and funds in an audit aimed at thwarting the outcome of a child-abuse case.

Man rolls car, hits parked trucks in Uintah

UINTAH — A 37-year-old man was taken to the hospital after rolling his car Monday night.

Ogden Duty Lt. Will Cragun said police were investigating the incident and suspected the driver was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The 6:38 p.m. incident occurred when the man drove his 2006 Honda CVR southbound on the 3400 block of Quincy Avenue into the intersection witih Doxey Avenue.

Man with gun kicks in door of South Ogden home

SOUTH OGDEN — Police are looking for a man carrying a handgun who kicked in a back door at a home.

The man, who was wearing a ski mask, entered a home on the 3900 block of Evelyn Drive in South Ogden at 1 p.m. Monday. He encountered a woman and fled the home.

No one was injured.

Police do not know what the motive was.

The man is described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing between 175 pounds and 190 pounds.

Criminal probe targets FLDS polygamist sect

 

PHOENIX -- Law enforcement in a town dominated by one of the nation's largest polygamous sects has been preventing women from leaving, leading to a criminal probe of the church run by its jailed leader Warren Jeffs, Arizona's attorney general said Tuesday.

No obvious signs of foul play on body found on Mount Ogden, official says

OGDEN — A male body was found by Snowbasin Ski Patrol near the antenna towers at the top of Mount Ogden.

Helicopters from Air-Med and Utah Department of Public Service were used Tuesday to assist Weber County Sheriff’s Office mountain rescue personnel recover the body, said Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther.

At this time, the identity of the body and the cause of death are unknown.

Morgan officer who shot woman won't be prosecuted

LAYTON — Although a Morgan County deputy’s shooting of a female motorist in November appears to have been unjustified, the officer won’t be prosecuted, Davis County Attorney Troy S. Rawlings said Tuesday.

OGDEN — A body of man has been found by Snowbasin Ski Patrol near the antenna towers at the top of Mt. Ogden Peak in Weber County.
