JERUSALEM -- Palestinians say Israeli soldiers intervening in a clash between West Bank residents and Jewish settlers have opened fire, wounding seven Palestinians.
Israeli media say Palestinians armed with knives approached a settlement outpost near the West Bank city of Nablus, setting off Monday's confrontation.
The Israeli military says that during a demonstration, Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers. They responded with crowd control means and then opened fire. Palestinian hospital officials say one of the seven was seriously wounded.
Tension runs high between Palestinians, Israeli settlers and the military. About 300,000 Israeli settlers live in more than 100 West Bank enclaves. Palestinians claim the West Bank for part of their future state.
