Gaza militants rocket Israel, drawing reprisals

JERUSALEM -- Israeli aircraft struck the Gaza Strip on Thursday in response to militant rocket and mortar attacks, stoking concerns that a grave new round of hostilities will fill the vacuum left by an impasse in Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.

Two years of relative calm have been unraveling in recent weeks with acts of violence against Israelis -- including a deadly bombing in Jerusalem on Wednesday that killed a British tourist -- and Israeli reprisals against Gaza militants, which in one case killed four Palestinian civilians.

Militants operating near the Israeli border sent at least nine rockets and mortars -- including two rockets that reached the city of Ashdod -- flying at Israeli communities throughout the day, drawing an Israeli airstrike in retaliation. No injuries were reported on either side.

Palestinians: Israeli troops mistakenly kill man

HEBRON, West Bank -- Israeli troops mistakenly shot and killed a 65-year-old Palestinian man Friday during a predawn raid to arrest a Hamas militant in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said.

Omar Kawasmeh lived on a different floor of the same building, according to security and rescue officials in the city of Hebron.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement was made.

Associated Press television footage showed a bloodstained bed and shell casings in the man's bedroom.

Israeli companies to help build Palestinian city

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- About 20 Israeli suppliers will help build the first modern Palestinian city in the West Bank but only after promising they will not use products or services from Israeli settlements, the project's developer said Tuesday.

The announcement angered the Jewish settlers, who accused the suppliers of caving in to an international boycott of settlement goods and businesses.

Israel moves to counter Gaza militants' new weapon

JERUSALEM -- Israel will deploy tanks equipped with a new defense system along the Gaza border after Palestinian militants for the first time used a sophisticated, tank-piercing missile believed to be the most advanced weapon in their arsenal.

Israeli defense officials said the laser-guided Kornet came from Iran, the top backer of Gaza's Hamas rulers. Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah guerrillas, also backed by Iran, used the Russian-made Kornets in their 2006 war against Israel, destroying or damaging several dozen Israeli tanks.

Israel draws international rebuke over settlements

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The European Union, the United Nations and the Arab League have rebuked Israel after its refusal to halt settlement construction forced Washington to drop efforts to relaunch Mideast peace talks.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday stuck to his position that he won't negotiate without a freeze of Jewish settlement building in the West Bank and east Jerusalem -- lands captured by Israel and sought by the Palestinians for their state. He spoke after meeting in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman.
