Job Corps enrollment freeze ends

WASHINGTON — The Labor Department lifted its controversial hold on Job Corps enrollments Monday, ending an action the agency took in January to deal with an estimated $60 million shortfall for the federal job-training program.

The move comes as good news for individuals who were locked out of the program in a stubbornly sluggish job market, but the Job Corps still plans to reduce enrollment by 20 percent, according to the National Job Corps Association (NJCA), which represents the contractors that run the training centers.

Bishop displeased with Job Corps enrollment freeze

WASHINGTON — Rep. Rob Bishop does not understand why Department of Labor officials are ignoring alternative cost-saving measures proposed by Job Corps stakeholders to address a $59 million shortfall from program year 2012.

“The attitude of the Department of Labor does not make sense for long-term savings,” Bishop said on Monday.

In January, the Department of Labor confirmed the federal government would cut 534 slots at the Clearfield Job Corps site. The local facility currently has 1,057 students, so the cutback will take more than half of the student population.
