OGDEN -- John L. Smith was restless the night before being named the head football coach at his alma mater, so he got up early and drove to the Weber State campus. What used to be the practice field off of Harrison Boulevard when he played linebacker and quarterback at WSU from 1968-71 is now a mini-lake."A few short years ago, a small-town boy from Iona, Idaho, drove down here, got out of his car, walked around and looked at the stadium and said, 'You know what, I've made it to the big time,' " Smith said. "Since then, I've coached where Knute Rockne has, Bear Bryant, some of those places. I've been to the 'Shoe, I've been to the Big House, I've been to both Valleys -- Death and Happy -- and they are big time. This morning, I couldn't sleep, so it was about daylight, I drove around to see the new facilities on campus. I got out of the car and had the same sense -- I have now made it to the big time. I truly believe that. I'm back and happy to be here, and thankful to be here."
