Preteens blamed for extensive vandalism in West Point

WEST POINT -- The homes in the cul-de-sac now show no visible signs of the vandalism that occurred early Saturday morning.

"We get reports of toilet papering with no damage all the time," said Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen. "But something of this magnitude is rare. The kids involved caused so much damage, and they were so young."

8-year-old's arrest prompts questions about involving police

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The 8-year-old boy hit, kicked and bit his teachers, threw a metal pipe and missed, broke a window, tore out computer wiring and ran away from his Orange County, Fla., school.

He now has a mug shot and a rap sheet detailing five arrests since November, all on charges that stem from his troubled behavior at Riverside Elementary. The boy is assigned to a special unit at the school for youngsters with significant emotional or behavioral problems. The Orlando Sentinel is not naming the boy because of his age.

News of the boy's latest arrest last week -- on an aggravated-assault charge, among others -- raised alarm among advocates for disabled children and among those who think Florida schools are too quick to involve police when kids misbehave.

In trying child defendant for slaying, remorse at issue

A boy who was 11 when he was charged with killing his father's pregnant fiancee maintained his innocence in interviews with psychologists.

But a judge in western Pennsylvania's Lawrence County said the boy's refusal to take responsibility for the crime dimmed his prospects for rehabilitation in the juvenile justice system and ruled last year that he would stand trial as an adult.

Now, a three-judge Superior Court panel must decide whether it was permissible for Judge Dominick Motto to use Jordan Brown's lack of remorse as a factor against the boy when he decided not to move his case to juvenile court.
