UCLA professor charged in lab fire that killed staffer

LOS ANGELES -- Felony charges have been filed against the University of California and a UCLA chemistry professor in connection with a laboratory fire that killed a staff research assistant three years ago.

While much of the public outcry over Los Alamos in recent years has focused on lagging cleanup efforts of radioactive waste and hazardous runoff into the canyons, earthquake danger and the potential for catastrophic releases of radiation from existing facilities was front and center at a recent meeting in Santa Fe of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.

Questions swirl around $6 billion nuclear lab

SANTA FE, N.M. — At Los Alamos National Laboratory, scientists and engineers refer to their planned new $6 billion nuclear lab by its clunky acronym, CMRR, short for Chemistry Metallurgy Research Replacement Facility. But as a work in progress for three decades and with hundreds of millions of dollars already spent, nomenclature is among the minor issues.

Oak Ridge lab shut down Internet, email after cyber attack

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- A highly sophisticated cyber attack -- known as Advanced Persistent Threat -- forced Oak Ridge National Laboratory to shut down all Internet access and email systems over the weekend.

Those restrictions will remain in place until lab officials and others investigating the attack are sure the situation is well controlled and manageable, Director Thom Mason said.

"We made the decision (at about midnight Friday) to close down the connection to the Internet to make sure there was no data ex-filtrated from the lab while we got the system cleaned up," he said.
