Calif., Nevada merge Tahoe's bid for 2022 Olympics

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California and Nevada officials announced Thursday that they are joining forces in their effort to lure the Winter Games back to the Lake Tahoe area in 2022, forming an exploratory committee to start the process.

Nevada agrees with California to make 2022 Olympics run

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada has agreed with officials in California to make a run at hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics at Lake Tahoe, in hopes of bringing the games back to an area where they were held in 1960, Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki said Wednesday.

If successful, the games would return to the United States for the first time since Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002. Squaw Valley, a resort on the California side of Lake Tahoe, hosted the Winter games in 1960.

Krolicki told Nevada tourism leaders in Las Vegas on Wednesday that the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition has a memorandum of understanding with California leaders to try to convince the U.S. Olympic Committee to back their bid and take it to the International Olympic Committee.

Well-preserved body of diver missing for 17 years found in Lake Tahoe

The body of a diver who disappeared 17 years ago in Lake Tahoe's deep, frigid waters has been found, authorities in El Dorado County, Calif., confirmed Monday.

The well-preserved body of Donald Christopher Windecker was discovered July 23 on an underwater shelf 265 feet below the surface. A remote-controlled mini-submarine equipped with a robotic claw raised the remains on July 27. Lake Tahoe is located on the border between California and Nevada.

Postcards everywhere you look

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. -- We were flying a few thousand feet above the sunny Carson Valley, high enough to see the deep blue of Lake Tahoe over the snow-frosted mountains to the left. I was just getting comfortable, checking out the view from the glider's back seat as a small plane pulled us with a tow rope.

Then the pilot released the rope, and the plane veered away from us. It got quiet -- real quiet. We were alone.
