CEDAR CITY -- Utah transportation officials say they're ahead of schedule to open a portion of a southern Utah highway that's been blocked since a massive landslide last fall.
OGDEN -- Utah is famous as earthquake country, with the Wasatch Mountains serving as an obvious natural marker for the fault line that built them hundreds of millions of years ago.
The earthquake potential of western Oregon was a much better-kept secret until the past decade or two, said Scott F. Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University.

CEDAR CITY — Utah transportation officials have closed a state highway east of Cedar City after a massive landslide buried part of the roadway in about 100 feet of dirt and rock.
NORTH SALT LAKE — A July 2 pancake breakfast at a North Salt Lake park raised more than $7,500 to help victims of an area landslide, according to a news release.
It's not just farming and business that will take a hit from existing and predicted flooding in the Top of Utah. The recreation and tourism industries also likely will be affected.
FARMINGTON — Due to the 5.3 inches of rainfall in Farmington during the month of May, including snow on Sunday night, a third rock slide has closed Farmington Canyon road again.
HUNTSVILLE — A significant landslide on State Road 39 was unable to be cleared overnight because the land is still unsettled, officials say.
“There’s still stuff coming down gradually,” Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Phillip Howell said. “It’s not traumatic or anything, but UDOT wasn’t able to clean it up because it is still settling.”
