Back in the Stone Age, when folks my age played football competitively, getting your bell rung -- as they used to call it -- was really no big deal.

However, our coaches in the 1980s weren't unfeeling monsters obsessed with winning at our personal expense. They just had no idea of the long-term effects of all that bell-ringing.
