Ogden offers a variety of Cinco de Mayo activities

OGDEN — Car shows, artwork and dancing are some of the activities that will celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

In 1862, a ragtag group of Mexicans fought back the army of Napolean III, helping oust French occupiers from Mexican soil.

On the 150th anniversary of the famous battle, Latinos from diverse backgrounds in Utah — not just Mexicans — will use the day to share their culture with the community.

As the Bard of Avon asked, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet.”

For many Latinos, though, the name they use to describe themselves can mean a lot.

Ogden district's at-risk youth program at risk itself

OGDEN — Parents are concerned that budgeting constraints will force the Ogden School District to trim a program for at-risk youths.

Right now, the Colors of Success program exists at four schools in the district and aims to help at-risk youths build healthy futures, primarily through mentoring.

But, the district higher-ups are taking a close look at their budgets and may ax the program.

The Top of Utah has many Latinos, but few are running for office

OGDEN -- Statewide, about a dozen people with Spanish last names or who identify as Latino have filed to run for elective office.

Only a few of those names are in the Top of Utah, and no Latino has filed for federal office.

The U.S. Census reports that 30 percent of Ogden's population is Latino. About 17 percent of Weber County and 8.4 percent of Davis County are Latinos, who make up about 13 percent of the state population.

Profiling lawsuit adds to Ariz. sheriff's troubles

PHOENIX -- A judge heard arguments Thursday in a lawsuit that alleges racial profiling in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration patrols, a week after federal authorities accused the sheriff's office of a wide range of civil rights violations.

The lawsuit was filed by a handful of Latinos who claim officers based some traffic stops on the race of Hispanics in vehicles, pulling them over without probable cause to inquire about their immigration status.

Despite being in an almost all-white town, the school’s enrollment is about 65 percent Hispanic. Hispanic students have started vanishing from Alabama public schools in the wake of a court ruling that upheld the state’s tough new law cracking down on illegal immigration. Education officials say scores of immigrant families have withdrawn their children from classes or kept them home this week, afraid that sending the kids to school would draw attention from authorities. There are no precise statewide numbers. But several districts with large immigrant enrollments — from small towns to large urban districts — reported a sudden exodus of children of Hispanic parents, some of whom told officials they would leave the state to avoid trouble with the law, which requires schools to check students’ immigration status.
