SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police are remembering an officer who was killed in an accidental shooting 116 years ago this week.
Sgt. Alonzo M. Wilson was struck by a bullet when a new patrolman dropped a loaded pistol at the Salt Lake City police station. The shot shattered Wilson's right leg and as doctors amputated they found the bullet had moved into his torso.
Police say Wilson died about five hours after he was shot on April 12, 1894. His wife gave birth to their seventh child the next day.
Wilson is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
