Jayhawks open playoffs with solid win

OGDEN — The Jayhawks got off to a strong start to postseason, posting a solid win to open the state 2-A boys soccer tournament.

Kafentzis rips up Silver Wolves’ D in Plain City

PLAIN CITY — After consecutive trips to the state 5-A championship game, Fremont coach Kory Bosgieter knew his young team was in for some hard knocks early in the season. What he probably wasn’t anticipating, however, was watching his team get blown out on its own field in the season opener.

But that’s what happened.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Kafentzis passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Jordan Beetdiggers worked Fremont over with an easy 53-12 win.

Weber's Murdock scores 4 against Northridge

PLEASANT VIEW — The cool weather brought out the best in a few goal-scoring machines on Thursday as boys soccer took center stage in Top of Utah prep sports.

Weber, Davis draw 1-1 after 104 minutes of play

PLEASANT VIEW — After 104 minutes of action, few could agree on whether the Davis and Weber boys soccer teams had played enough.

LAYTON 1, FREMONT O: At Plain City, the Lancers’ Christian Love scored the game’s only goal in an evenly-played match.

The Lancers are now 1-1-0 in league, 5-2-0 overall. The Silver Wolves fell to 0-2-0 and 2-6-0.

SYRACUSE 3, NORTHRIDGE 1: At Syracuse, a neat hat trick from Kyle Coffey did the trick for the host Titans (1-1-0 league, 15-0 overall).

Connor Roberts scored for the Knights (1-1-0, 2-4-0).

2-A North

OAKLEY 2, LAYTON CHRISTIAN 0: At Layton, visiting Oakley got goals from Ben Weed and David Ament and slowed down the Eagles’ usually potent offensive attack.

LCA is now 3-1-0 in league, 4-2-0 overall.

Non-league

OLYMPUS 2, LOGAN 0: At Salt Lake City, the Grizzlies were shut out.

In other games, East stopped Woods Cross 3-0, while Viewmont topped Granger 1-0 in Region 2 action.

Prep baseball: Tigers bounce back

OGDEN -- After suffering their first defeat in region play to start the season Tuesday afternoon, the Ogden Tigers got back on track by defeating crosstown rivals Ben Lomond 8-0 Thursday afternoon thanks to a couple of big innings at the plate.

"I was proud of the way that we responded after what happened earlier this week," Ogden coach Troy Kolan said. "Joe (Bischoff) pitched a great game and kept them off-balance with his curveball today. We had some key hits from Hunter (Anderson) and Kameron Laird and that made all the difference."

Both pitchers threw the ball extremely well in the beginning as Bischoff and Ben Lomond's Alex Craft each threw three scoreless innings. Those three innings lasted a grand total of 30 minutes as each team was cruising defensively.

Prep soccer: Scots top Tigers in OT

OGDEN -- Victor Gallindo scored the game-winner in extra time to give Ben Lomond a 3-2 win over Ogden on the Scots' home pitch.

Luis Zarate helped Ben Lomond get the Region 11 victory by netting two goals before Gallindo's golden goal.

Dayton Wright and Jose Valtierra each scored for Ogden in the crosstown rivalry showdown.

Girls basketball: Davis darts into 5-A playoffs

KAYSVILLE -- In a battle of serious basketball runs, the Darts had the last big surge.

Davis High's girls basketball team outscored Fremont 16-10 in the final quarter Thursday afternoon to post a 51-46 victory in the teams' Region 1 play-in game.

The victory gives the Darts a spot in the state 5-A tournament, which begins Tuesday at Salt Lake Community College. Davis and Alta will play at 12:50 p.m.

Girls basketball: Lakers get ugly win over Griz

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It was not smooth sailing this week for the league-leading Lakers.

First up was a rocky six-point road win Tuesday over last-place Box Elder. Then Thursday, Bonneville had to regroup after a turnover-plagued, three-point third quarter to subdue the Grizzlies 49-37 and remain undefeated in Region 5.

"I think we had a good first half," Lakers junior guard/forward Emilie Volk said. "We weren't up on our feet like we should have been on defense and they got some 3-pointers. We couldn't miss when we were up there (shooting 49.1 percent in a 65-39 win on Jan. 17). I think we were ready; our shots weren't falling as much."

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

Prep girls basketball: Lancers wallop Warriors

LAYTON -- Non-league wins do not get you into the state girls basketball tournament.

After going undefeated during the preseason, the Lancers opened Region 1 play Tuesday against a team they hadn't beaten since a sweep in the 2006-07 season.

Limiting Weber High to a season-low point total, Layton snapped an eight-game skid versus the Warriors with a wire-to-wire 46-27 victory.

Girls basketball: Silver Wolves falter in OT heartbreaker

PLAIN CITY -- Few of us like to work overtime, but the Fremont High girls basketball team also had to watch visiting Cyprus celebrate a one-point win on their home court on Wednesday evening.

The Silver Wolves fell 65-64 to the Pirates in OT in non-league action. Cyprus' Lori Parkinson hit a pair of free throws with less than four seconds to go in the extra period.

The Fremont coaching staff felt like the Wolves made progress, though, as they get ready for Region 1 wars.

Prep sports: Opening tips tonight in basketball, wrestling

With the cold weather upon us, Top of Utah basketball squads are ready to jump into action tonight and Wednesday as the preseason play begins around the state.

Following a solid slate of games tonight -- including boys games like Northridge at Bountiful, Ogden at Box Elder and Ben Lomond at Bonneville -- the teams take a four-day Thanksgiving moratorium before resuming preseason action next week.

Girls games today involving two local schools include Bear River at Logan, Morgan at Mountain Crest, and Bountiful at Sky View.
