Marking another year with tea and joy and a white stone

Lewis Carroll, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," marked wonderful days in his diary “with a white stone” — an ancient Roman tradition — so let me say that Sunday, the final day of my 63rd year on the planet, is marked with a brilliant white stone indeed.

I got to spend it with my gracious and lovely granddaughter, Alice, who is almost 2.

BYU a cappella group gets exposure on NBC's 'The Sing-Off'

Vocal Point, Brigham Young University's nine-man a cappella ensemble, finished its run Monday night on the third season of the NBC vocal competition "The Sing-Off." The group made it to the final five, concluding with "Every Little Step," by Bobby Brown, and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," by The Temptations."

The ensemble includes sophomore business major Jake Hunsaker, who was born in Ogden and raised in West Weber. The other current members of the 20-year-old collegiate group are Keith Evans, of Orem; Tanner Nilsson and McKay Crockett, both from Sandy; Ben Murphy, of Sydney, Australia; Michael Christensen, of Eagle River, Alaska; Robert Seely, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Ross Welch, of Cody, Wyo.; and Tyler Sterling, of Renton, Wash.

Enslavement and the human spirit

Imagine not knowing your age or birthday. Imagine hiding in a closet as you see your aunt stripped to the waist and savagely whipped until her blood runs freely. Imagine seeing the grandmother who raised you put out to die alone, infirm and afraid.

Imagine teaching yourself to read and write. Imagine dreaming of freedom. Imagine brawling with a man -- a man who intended to beat you -- for more than two hours. Imagine winning that fight and rising to become one of the greatest leaders of the modern civil rights movement.

Imagine the early life of Frederick Douglass.

Neener-neener, Fresno, SLC still the winner

Sheesh, you buy one little Winter Olympics and you're forever after labeled a cheater-pants.

It was shades of winning the bid to host the 2002 Olympic games all over again, as last week some very bitter people in California's grape-producing San Joaquin Valley (motto: "Napa Valley's got nothing on our whines") accused Salt Lake City of cheating in a "Fighting Hunger Together" contest conducted by Walmart.

It all started when the megacorporation announced that some of the $2 billion it has committed to battling hunger over the next few years would be distributed in a Facebook contest. Walmart promised that whichever city amassed the most "Like" clicks on Facebook would win $1 million for its hunger-fighting charities. And that five runner-up cities in the voting would receive $100,000 each.

That redhead is back

BURBANK, Calif. -- Remember when Conan O'Brien was merely the funniest redhead on the planet?

Now, through some weird twists of fate you couldn't make up, he's also the creator and producer of a reality series called "Extreme Makeover: Talk Show Edition."

You remember the first makeover, the one known as "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien." That took place at Universal Studios and lasted all of seven months on NBC. The new makeover, known as "Conan," is being put together three miles away, at Stage 15 on the Warner Bros. lot.

Ready for a divinely inspired, post-election reality check?

Now that the dust has begun to settle on last week's elections, what we could really use right now is some in-depth political analysis.

So why are you reading this?

I'll tell you why: Because I'm about to open up a big ol' can of In-depth Political Analysis on you people.

Granted, every time I wade into any kind of discussion on politics in this space, I get plenty of condescending e-mails from readers, who inform me that hearing my thoughts on the subject is like taking relationship advice from Charlie Sheen.

But I'm fairly certain that I can at the very least intelligently discuss a few political realities that emerged from Election 2010 here in The Beehive State ...

Bling ... with benefits

You can't miss the new athletic jewelry.

Necklaces in varying styles were worn by players in last night's World Series. Several PGA professionals have bracelets on their wrists. Pro football players are starting to catch onto the idea, wearing them around their necks and wrists.

HOW TO: Get a child ready for a first filling

Going to the dentist is scary for many children, especially when they have their first cavity. Here are tips from dentists on getting them through the procedure:

Answer questions. If your child wants to know what will happen, give her some honest details: where she'll sit, the noises she'll hear and how her mouth will feel strange and "sleepy" for a while.

Emphasize the positive. Explain how lucky your child is to have a good dentist who can fix his tooth.

Help for parents who want to raise active kids

In the midst of a school year, it's hard to help kids find time for fitness. Come to think of it, it's hard for grown-ups to find the time too.

Heroes vs. villains: Our bodies need antioxidants to fight free radicals

There's a battle going on in your cells.

To stretch or not to stretch ... and dynamic vs. static

The one theory of stretching everyone seems to agree on can be summed up in two words: Don't bounce.
