WILLARD -- A bolt of lightning hit a tree and caused it to catch fire Tuesday morning as a brief but intense storm swept through Northern Utah.

Willard Fire Chief Van Mund said firefighters managed to put out the fire quickly. The tree stands in a backyard, about 400 feet from the nearest structure, so the fire did not threaten nearby homes.

"We have just enough moisture in the northern part of the state that it has caused thunderstorms," National Weather Service meteorologist Nanette Hosenfeld said.

Lightning bolt injures man

WEST HAVEN -- The lightning storm that moved through the Top of Utah Friday morning injured a construction worker when a bolt nearly hit him.

The man, in his late 30s, was not immediately identified. He was walking toward his truck at the Granite Construction Company supply site in West Haven when lightning struck the truck at 9:15 a.m., said Capt. Casey Naef of Weber Fire District. Because of how close he was, the man was thrown several feet in the air and landed on his face.
