Nev. town mourns Marines killed in training explosion

 

HAWTHORNE, Nev. -- Hundreds of residents in a rural community steeped in military history turned out to mourn the loss of at least seven Marines as investigators arrived at an ammunition depot to try to determine how a mortar shell exploded at the Nevada base and sent shrapnel flying into troops during a training exercise.

Mortar explosion kills 7 Marines in Nev. training accident

HAWTHORNE, Nev. — A 60mm mortar explosion killed seven Marines and injured a half-dozen more during a training exercise in the Nevada desert, prompting the Pentagon to immediately halt the use of the weapon worldwide until an investigation can determine its safety, a military official said Tuesday.

In surprise reunion, Marine meets friend he thought died in 9/11

BALTIMORE -- In 26 years as a Marine, Sgt. Maj. Brian Taylor has lost several comrades. But he never forgot that "puny little squiggly kid" from West Baltimore who "just had all of this motivation and no direction."

Taylor had been a mentor to Sgt. Maurice Bease in the late 1990s, when they served together at a Marine Corps air station in San Diego. When he heard later that Bease died in the attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, he was devastated.

Woman charged in death of Marine's wife

SAN DIEGO -- A woman charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the slaying of a Camp Pendleton Marine's wife left a suicide note before paramedics found her with self-inflicted wounds, authorities said.

Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of killing 22-year-old Brittany Dawn Killgore, whose body was found Tuesday in brush near a Southern California lake.

Body found may be missing wife of Marine

SAN DIEGO -- A body, possibly of a Marine's wife missing since Friday, has been found in rural Riverside County near Lake Skinner, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday.

Top Marine targeted by runaway Afghan driver

ABOARD A US MILITARY AIRCRAFT -- The top U.S. commander in Helmand Province and his British deputy were with the U.S. Marines that an Afghan man tried to run down as they waited for Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to arrive in southern Afghanistan, defense officials acknowledged Friday, proving the incident to be more serious than had been disclosed earlier.

YUMA, Ariz. — Seven Marines were killed late Wednesday in a collision of two helicopters near Yuma, Ariz., during night training exercises, the Marine Corps said Thursday.

Commandant orders probe into use of Nazi symbols by Marines

SAN DIEGO -- Reacting to an uproar over Marines from Camp Pendleton posing with a flag showing a Nazi symbol, the commandant of the Marine Corps on Friday ordered an investigation to determine the prevalence of Nazi or "other unauthorized symbols" among scout-sniper squads.
