Individual insurance can be difficult to obtain

Like many others her age, 60-year-old Mary Ann Mason fell through one of the biggest trap doors in the American health care system: She's too young for Medicare, with too much retirement income to qualify for Medicaid or similar low-income insurance programs, and with one too many health problems to buy an affordable individual plan on the open market.

Idaho suspending Medicaid payments to hospitals

TWIN FALLS, Idaho -- The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is suspending Medicaid payments to hospitals around the state for at least one week because an increase in claims is straining its funding.

The suspension to 51 hospitals that accept Medicaid patients began Monday, delaying payment of about $13 million in claims, agency spokesman Tom Shanahan said.

"We're really sorry we have to suspend the payments, but we have to meet our budget," Shanahan told The Times-News.

Medicare could cover tests for soaring STD rate in senior citizens

Taxpayers could soon be picking up the tab for new sexually transmitted disease screenings for seniors, as well as other Medicare recipients.

More than a decade after Viagra and its ilk began helping boomers and seniors to enjoy conjugal relations more frequently, sexually transmitted disease rates are up dramatically in the over-40 age bracket.

And while wisdom is supposed to come with age, studies have also shown that men over 50 -- regardless of marital status -- are six times less likely to use a condom than men in their 20s, partly because, by that age, they (and their partner) are less worried about pregnancy.

Utah Senate advances Medicaid pilot program bill

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers have tentatively approved a proposal to require a small number of Medicaid recipients to do community service in exchange for coverage as part of a pilot program.

Bill would launch pilot for Medicaid community service requirement

SALT LAKE CITY -- Requiring community service from those who receive Medicaid could be a pilot program involving fewer than 100 participants, said Rep. Ronda Rudd Menlove.

Menlove, R-Garland, is sponsoring House Bill 211, which was passed Monday with a vote of 4-2 by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. It now goes before the Senate floor for further consideration.

"This is a pilot bill, it's not mandating," Menlove said to the committee. "This is creating a pilot program."
