Memorial Day

Memorial Day, mermaids, mayhem, models and more

Don’t miss

“Hatfields & Mccoys” — Over the years, most of us have heard of the famous 19th century clash of backwoods clans. But few of us actually know what got the rumble rolling, or that it very nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. This six-hour miniseries, airing over three nights, provides all the details and then some. It’s bolstered by vivid performances from Kevin Costner as Devil Anse Hatfield (yes, that’s his real name), and Bill Paxton as Randall McCoy. Also featured in the standout cast: Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe and Mare Winningham. Check local listings, Monday, History Channel

In this May 28, 2010 file photo, the rush hour commute starts in early afternoon and with greater intensity as traffic is jammed in both directions on Interstate 405 on the Westside of Los Angeles as commuters and vacationers hit the road. Cheaper gas won’t be enough to spur many more road trips this summer. Americans are too worried about their jobs and the economy to feel relief. Economists and tourism experts are expecting only a small uptick in summer travelers. Gas prices are lower, but still high enough to keep lower-income Americans off the road. The job market is improving, but still shaky. And household debt remains high. The bulk of road trippers, experts say, are taking shorter trips, reducing food and entertainment expenses or staying closer to home to conserve cash. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon, file)

More Americans plan on summer travel

Family carries on tradition with galoshes

Snow and slush didn't dampen the Dixon family's Memorial Day trip from Farr West to the Ogden Cemetery on Monday morning. Taylor and Stacey Dixon put galoshes on themselves and their four children and went to his grandparents' grave just as if it were sunny and warm.

Welcome to Memorial Day weekend in much of the West.

The traditional kickoff of the summer season will have a decidedly wintry feel in the Rocky Mountains, as well as California's Sierra Nevada, because of a lingering record snowfall.
