Hatch the 'elephant in the room' at GOP caucus in Ogden

OGDEN — It quickly became clear that Sen. Orrin Hatch was the “elephant in the room” for a group of Ogden neighbors.

At a Republican caucus Thursday night, 34 residents of the 12th precinct came together in a Ben Lomond High School classroom to decide who among them would go to the state and county conventions to represent their views.

I am sad to see Maine’s Olympia Snowe leaving the U.S. Senate.

Utah is not Maine, so normally I wouldn’t comment on Snowe, but I can’t get over the nagging thought that Snowe, a well-known moderate, is leaving because Utah’s voters elected Sen. Mike Lee two years ago.

One of the pleasant fictions of this year's U.S. Senate campaign was that Republican Sen.-elect Mike Lee was some sort of firebrand, independent, Tea Party I'm-against-the-establishment -- dare we say Palinesque? -- renegade Republican. It was all nonsense.

Utah's newest senator picks lobbyist as chief of staff

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's newest U.S. senator has picked a prominent state lobbyist to serve as his chief of staff.

Republican Mike Lee has asked Spencer Stokes to lead his Washington staff and coordinate his transition from candidate to senator. The Salt Lake Tribune first reported the news.

Stokes is currently registered to lobby for 18 organizations in the state, including energy interests and a credit union.

The two first met when Lee worked for Utah's former Gov. Jon Huntsman.
