US general discusses crackdown with Egypt ruler

CAIRO — The United States’ top general discussed an Egyptian crackdown on Western-funded pro-democracy groups with the head of the country’s ruling military council on Saturday, as another two foreigners were arrested on charges of fomenting discontent on the first anniversary of Hosni Mubarak’s ouster.

Stevenson wants help fighting BRAC

SALT LAKE CITY -- Local lawmakers are gearing up to prevent Hill Air Force Base from becoming a casualty in any Base Realignment and Closure action that may occur as the Defense Department cuts its budget.

Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, on Tuesday presented to the Senate Republican Caucus a proposal to set aside $500,000 for the Utah Defense Alliance, a nonprofit organization that has played a key role in keeping the base open during BRACs in 1995 and 2005.

Caucus meetings are closed to the public.

Vickie McCall is receiving the Wall of Fame award from the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce. The Wall of Fame honors those who have made major contributions to the community over time. McCall, a Realtor with Utah Executive Real Estate, started with the Ogden-Weber Chamber 35 years ago. She soon joined several committees, such as military affairs, Women in Business and legislative affairs. John Rich, award-winner director of landmark sitcoms, dies at 86

LOS ANGELES — As a top television comedy director who won an Emmy directing “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in the early 1960s, John Rich was faced with a tough choice in 1970.

On the same day he received a phone call from Mary Tyler Moore wanting to set up a meeting to discuss his directing the initial episode of her new TV series, he got a call from Norman Lear who wanted to send him a script for a pilot he was about to produce.

Ian Abercrombie, actor who played Elaine’s boss on 'Seinfeld,' dies at 77

LOS ANGELES — Ian Abercrombie, 77, the British character actor who played Elaine’s demanding boss, Mr. Pitt, on “Seinfeld,” died Thursday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said his friend Cathy Lind Hayes. He suffered complications of kidney failure and recently had been diagnosed with lymphoma.
