Romney is back, but GOP reception lukewarm

BOSTON -- Mitt Romney is back, if only briefly.

The former Republican presidential candidate is re-emerging after nearly four months in seclusion at his Southern California home.

Former aides describe his burst of activity this month - a national broadcast interview, a speech at a gathering of conservatives - as a thank-you tour of sorts designed to close out a lengthy political career.

His party isn't exactly clamoring for his return.

'Romneycare' becoming model for state health care systems

BOSTON  -- When Massachusetts adopted its landmark health care law in 2006 under then Gov. Mitt Romney, the goals were ambitious and the potential solutions complex.

More than 90 percent of its residents already had health insurance, but the state hoped to cover nearly everyone by plugging as many holes as possible in its system, short of a so-called single payer option.

GOP operatives blast Romney's ad strategy

WASHINGTON - Senior Republican campaign operatives who gathered over beer last week in Alexandria, Va. for a post-election briefing were taken aback by what they were told. A nonpartisan research firm presented data showing that President Barack Obama had far outperformed Mitt Romney in managing the largest single expenditure of the campaign: television advertising.

LAS VEGAS -- For sheer happy weirdness, nothing quite rivals the surreal encounters that occur at a major boxing match. Saturday night, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, as Manny Pacquiao readied himself in a dressing room for his fourth mega-fight with legendary Mexican foe Juan Manuel Marquez, Mitt Romney appeared. A guest of the Nevada Athletic Commission, Romney had dropped by the dressing room to wish the Filipino superstar good luck.

Romney in seclusion but friends say he's not bitter

SAN DIEGO - The man who planned to be president wakes up each morning now without a plan.

Mitt Romney looks out the windows of his beach house here in La Jolla, a moneyed and pristine enclave of San Diego, at noisy construction workers fixing up his next-door neighbor’s home, sending regular updates on the renovation. He devours news from 2,600 miles away in Washington about the “fiscal cliff” negotiations, shaking his head and wondering what if.
