RSL brings back four players

SANDY -- Real Salt Lake Thursday officially announced the return of four players -- MF Yordany Alvarez, FW Fabian Espíndola, MF Ned Grabavoy and FW Paulo Jr. -- ahead of the squad's 2012 Major League Soccer campaign.

Financial terms for the deals will not be disclosed.

Trades load up MLS West with firepower

In the past week, the Portland Timbers signed Scottish Premier League all-time scoring leader Kris Boyd, the Vancouver Whitecaps traded for former MLS Best XI forward Sebastien Le Toux and the Los Angeles Galaxy brought back 2010 MLS Golden Boot runner-up Edson Buddle.

That's a lot of firepower clustered within the Western Conference of Major League Soccer.

RSL plans open house for fans at Rio Tinto

SANDY -- Real Salt Lake has invited fans of the Claret-and-Cobalt old and new to Rio Tinto Stadium this Saturday, when they will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m.

During the free-admission event, fans will have the chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at RSL's home, go back-and-forth with RSL personalities during question-and-answer sessions and take advantage of special offers on tickets and merchandise.

The RSL open house will be the best time to secure a spot at the team's 2012 home opener on March 17 vs. the New York Red Bulls, as the afternoon will include an exclusive window to purchase single-game tickets in advance of the general public sale on Feb. 1.

New TV partnership kicks off RSL's 2012 campaign

While Real Salt Lake's 2012 campaign didn't officially start until this morning, the Claret-and-Cobalt have already made their first major splash of the season.

On Tuesday, RSL unveiled a new multi-year television broadcast partnership with KTVX that will showcase Real across the Beehive State like never before.

RSL and KTVX, along with KTVX-operated KUCW, will show 30 of Real Salt Lake's 34 regular season matches in full high-definition. The remaining four matches will be shown via national broadcast.

Beckham wants another MLS Cup

LOS ANGELES -- The Galaxy officially welcomed David Beckham back into the fold Thursday -- never mind the fact he'd never really left.

Never mind too that he hasn't finished signing the five contracts he has with the team, some of which run more than 40 pages.

Keller kicks back, but stays in touch with the soccer world

From scouting reports to snow reports.

Such has been part of the transition to retired life for former Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

In the two months since calling an end to a Hall of Fame career, Keller has embraced a commitment-free schedule and made the most of it. He has gone hunting, filmed commercials and has even become a factory rider for local company K2 Snowboards.

Impact draft Duke's Wenger with top MLS pick; RSL adds trio

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Andrew Wenger looked a bit sheepish the moment he was asked what teams and players he followed growing up. He knew his reply wasn't all that daring.

"Well, Manchester United," he said. "And, of course, David Beckham."

Now, Wenger may have a chance to play against him.

The expansion Montreal Impact selected the Duke forward with the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, choosing the most complete player available in the two-round draft.

The Hermann Trophy winner as the top NCAA player, Wenger was the ACC defensive player of the year last season and offensive player of the year this season, finishing with 17 goals and eight assists.

MLS discusses best protocol for concussions

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Major League Soccer is looking to take the lead with the best protocol for handling concussions.

Team doctors, athletic trainers and trainers from outside the sport attended the MLS Medical Symposium on Saturday.

While football and soccer has its share of concussions, men's soccer ranks fifth in terms of game-related concussions, according to Dr. Ruben J. Echemendia, a clinical neuropsychologist for the MLS who led the symposium.

How concussions are sustained differs in each sport, but identifying and treating concussions should be the same across various sports, he said.

MLS will have longest season, final on Dec. 1; RSL learns schedule

SANDY -- Major League Soccer will have its longest season this year, with the final played Dec. 1.

The league announced in November that its 17th season will start March 10, five days earlier than in 2011. Last year's final was Nov. 20.

With the expansion Montreal Impact giving the league 19 teams, MLS is switching to an unbalanced schedule while keeping the regular season at 34 games per team.

Just seven games conflict with FIFA fixture dates, when many star players are away with national teams: Chicago at New England (June 1); Los Angeles at Columbus; Portland at Toronto and Houston at Vancouver (Aug. 15); Portland at Colorado (Sept. 5); Salt Lake at Houston (Sept. 6); and Chivas USA at Seattle (Sept. 8).

About 83 percent of games are on weekends and holidays, and all 323 games will be televised live.

A record nine games are scheduled for April 28.

Real Salt Lake learned the 34-game slate that will mark its eighth season of MLS play. Real Salt Lake will begin the upcoming season on March 10, where its last campaign ended - The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. - with a Western Conference Championship rematch against the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy, with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m.

MLS moves on minus Beckham

LOS ANGELES -- Au revoir, David Beckham.

Although your aides-de-camp keep insisting nothing has been decided, everybody knows your move to the French club Paris Saint-Germain is pretty much a fait accompli.

(By the way, David, I hope you're reading this closely because you really should learn the language.)

When the deal does become official -- which probably will be after New Year's to assure the greatest possible media coverage -- we hear a "movie star" unveiling will be staged in central Paris. Sounds as if this will be the biggest signing on French soil since the Treaty at Versailles.

And the French may wind up regretting this deal almost as much.

Williams

RSL's Andy Williams retires from pro soccer

SANDY -- For Real Salt Lake, it is the end of an era.

For Andy Williams, his future is just getting started.

Williams, the last remaining player from Real's inaugural 2005 season, announced his retirement on KALL-AM 700's Bill and Spence Show late Monday afternoon.

Beckham: 'Big decision' to make on future

MANILA, Philippines -- David Beckham said he has a "big decision to make" after his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires and reiterated his desire to play for the British team at the 2012 London Olympics.

The former England captain arrived in Manila on Thursday with his Galaxy teammates for the second leg of a series of exhibitions.

"I'm very proud of the time that I've spent with the Galaxy and it might continue," said Beckham, whose contract expires at the end of the tour. "I think at the end of the day I have a big decision to make, but I obviously haven't made one yet."

DC United gets Robbie Russell from Real Salt Lake

WASHINGTON -- Defender Robbie Russell has been traded to D.C. United by Real Salt Lake for a 2013 MLS SuperDraft third-round pick.

The 32-year-old Russell appeared in 78 games, including 68 starts, over four seasons with Real Salt Lake. This season, he had two assists in 26 games in the regular season, plus three starts in the playoffs.

He scored the penalty kick that ended the shootout when RSL won the 2009 MLS Cup.

Patton: MLS title should make history for Landon Donovan

History may not be especially kind to Landon Donovan.

Down the road, the world soccer community will likely remember the Galaxy's victory in MLS Cup 2011 Sunday night as "the David Beckham team."

But make no mistake, the Galaxy is Donovan's team, and has been for seven seasons since he arrived in 2005.

Donovan, Beckham lead LA Galaxy to MLS title

CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan scored in the 72nd minute on passes from Robbie Keane and David Beckham, and the Los Angeles Galaxy's three superstars won their first MLS Cup together with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday night.

Beckham won his first MLS championship in the final game of his groundbreaking five-year contract with the Galaxy, who rolled through the postseason to the franchise's third league title after finishing with MLS' best regular-season record.

Beckham punctuated a solid performance in the MLS Cup with an alert header to Keane, the Irish striker who joined Los Angeles in midseason. Keane made a run and eventually fed Donovan, who struck home his record 20th MLS playoff goal.
